Hopefully I will have more luck this time. About ten years ago, my mother checked out a book from the library. This book was so fantastical that she would forget to continue reading out loud to her 10 year old son (me at the time), it drew her in so much. I ended up staying home 'sick' for days, reading it to myself. Even as a silly 10 year old, I realized what a unique and ultimately amazing book it was. Of course, it got returned and while i did make sure to write the author down, it was subsequently lost in a move.
The title of the book was, I'm almost positive, simply "The War". As you can imagine, this makes searching for it a might bit incredibly difficult. I'll run through a quick synopsys.
The book was large and hardback, with many illustrations. It probably came out in 1990-1996, but it could have been from the 80s. The art style and writing was very unlike anything from the 80s though.
It was most definately a fantasy . It begins with a boy sitting in a vacant mansion with his pet Beagle (this is what i remember but my mom thinks it was a cat). An alternate reality version of the boy somehow gets him to go into this other dark world where there is a dark knight.
This was not an average children's book. It was incredibly mature. Not in the sense of blood or gore or any of that juvinile maturity. It was not carefree. There was a very present feeling of death in this story, which was vividly illustrated in bluish hues. This dark knight was the main antagonist but was not the heart of the problems. Somewhere in the middle of the book, i remember the knight slaughtering the boy's dog.
I really wish i could remember many more details, but that is about where it ends. Searching 'war' anywhere gets millions of results. I have lost hope that i will ever find this extraordinary book that easily surpassed the hobbit, which before this was my favorite. Here is a list for the folks who are into that sort of thing.
anybody with the faintest idea of the book i speak of- i would be indefinately thankful. I am only nearing 20 years of age but i fully intend on searching for this book for as long as i have the ability to.

- Boy in empty mansion
- Has a pet (I think a beagle)
- Alternate self somehow draws him into this dark alternate world which could have been as simple as walking through a door (not going through any crazy timeshifts or that kind of thing)
- Dark Knight, immediate threat, not usual children's story knight. Very frightening and malicious.
- Dark Knight possibly kills boy's animal.
