The Maritimes

nomadic myth

Anyone from the Maritimes in Canada? I'm a Nova Scotia boy living in Korea now. Anyway, that's not the important question.

I just read The Old Judge; or, Life in a Colony by Haliburton, and I want to read some more Maritime literature. Any suggestions? I would prefer stuff that is set in the Maritimes, and that would be considered "literary".

I lived in Canada for quite a while, and am very familiar with the Maritimes. I particularly enjoyed Alistair McLeod, who I believe is a Cape Bretoner. "The Lost Salt Gift of Blood" was a great read. I'll put my thinking cap of for you regarding any more :)

Not sure if jenngorham is still about on this forum, unfortunately, but she's a NS gal too.

Thanks. I'll try Alistair MacLeod.

I also think I'll go for L.M. Montgomery. I didn't get to her in childhood, but I guess I'll dive in now.

Alistair MacLeod is awesome. I read As Birds Bring Forth the Sun and Other Stories, and No Great Mischief. The story "To Every Thing There Is a Season" is so beautiful I almost cried.

I also found James DeMille, who seems to be a second tier type of author, but whose books are apparently often set in the Maritimes.

And Mi'kmaq legends. The Mi'kmaq are the First Nation in the Maritimes.

Don't know if you have read it, but I could recommend The Shipping News. While its not set in PEI, NS, or NB, it is set in Newfoundland.

I'm not from the Maritimes, but I hoped I helped.

I read it just over ten years ago, and loved it, so I think it's time for a re-read for sure. Thanks.
