The new Nick Hornby, anyone?

novella

Has anyone read the new novel by Nick Hornby? It's just coming out in the US, but I think it's been available in the UK for a while. Comments welcome.

Thanks.

Thanks lies.
"About a Boy", wasn't bad, I liked it. Read it for a "school-assignment". It was a fine read.
You shouldn't read "Fever Pitch" though, unless you are an Arsenal-fan.

Yes, a British one with Colin Firth. They did a Hollywoodian remake too, with Drew Barrymore.

I really like the book High Fidelity. I've also enjoyed some of Hornby's essays on music.

The High Fidelity movie was okay, but I would have preferred an English production I think.

There's a movie of it?
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo?

I haven't seen the original, but the remake is a very very very loose adatation (having read the book). In fact, the only thing in common would have to be that the main character is a man fixated on a sports team. It's not even about soccer. It's about the american version of Hornby's character, the Sox fan. I think the fact that the sox won the world series pretty much nullified the point they were trying to make in remaking that movie.

i only read high fidelity adn i wasn't too captured by it, he has a style i don't enjoy and his character only scratched the surface.

Ive read A Long Way Down. I did like it. I love the characters Hornby creates and there's some good ones in here.

About A Boy was great and definitely avoid Fever Pitch unless you are a Gooner.

A Long Way Down?

I've only read How to Be Good myself and I didn't like it. Does anyone know if I'll hate his other books too?

I really liked both High Fidelity and About a Boy, but I didn't care for How to Be Good. I think it's woth you giving them a try, Lies.

I've requested A Long Way Down at the local public library, but there are 45 holds on it before me. It means I'll be lucky to get it before the end of summer. However, if someone convinces me that it's really exceptional, I might talk myself into shelling out the hardcover price.

I really liked About A Boy and High Fidelity (thought the movies were pretty good too), so look forward to this one.

I've just finished A Long Way Down and I would like to say that it is definitely worth a read. Hornby confronts the different factors that drive people to contemplate suicide, and then events that can make them change their mind.

Four very different characters, with each of them getting to tell their point of view in the first person, instead of the narration in third person, which gives it a personal touch.

And of course, there is the humerous elements that Hornby is known for.

My favourite character is Jess, because she reminds me of a lot of my friends :p
