To those that have read both how much more will I get out of Ulysses if I read Homer's Odyssey first?

Although I've read neither they are both sitting on my shelf, but I've read about them. I'd say it may be worth reading Homer's original first because you will then see the physical encounters which Joyce, in Ulysses, sometimes switches to emotional encounters.

I've never really had an interest in Homer's works. I had leafed through a couple before and it didn't look like great reading but I didn't look too closely. I was also a much different reader then. Now that Ulysses is an important book on my reading list I've looked a little closer. There are Penguin published translations that are fairly recent that don't appear to be as terse as what I have seen before.

Penguin Printing of The Odyssey.
