Book committee to review porn complaint

Last update: September 15, 2005

DELAND -- A committee of educators and community representatives will be appointed soon to review a mother's complaint that her daughter's DeLand High reading assignment included pornography.

Vikki Reed of DeBary met with DeLand High Principal Mitch Moyer on Wednesday in an unsuccessful attempt to resolve her contention that the book in question is unacceptable for high school reading assignments.

Reed has objected to two passages, one that mentions oral sex and another describing a girl's sexual fantasies, in "Cracking India" by Bapsi Sidhwa. The book was assigned to 153 juniors, including Reed's daughter, in DeLand's International Baccalaureate program for academically advanced students.

The committee will review the school's use of the book in light of Reed's complaint and recommend whether teachers should be able to continue assigning it as required reading. Superintendent Margaret Smith will make the final decision.

Well, at least there are oral sex and sexual fantasies for to them to argue about, instead of things more vague. Good luck to them! :)

If this book was assigned to mainstream juniors, I might think it too mature to discuss in school (we're talking 16, 17 year-olds). However, this is for the International Baccalaureate program. These are supposed to be advanced students studying English at a university level.

The real question should be whether the book has literary merit to be assigned at all. If it has literary merit, then I think the problem is not whether it should be taken off the reading list, but whether the mother should remove her daughter from the program. I can't imagine these two (only 2!) passages being inappropriate at the university level.

In that case, since there are only two passages, it shouldn't be banned. It would be interesting if a book with passages about graphic violence would be banned too, oris it just sex that gets parents riled up?

damnit.

get my hopes up, click the thread, and it's a friggin book discussion.

jeeze.

(BTW - Ell, I really like your new avatar, but I think CDA might take exception to it! :D )

I'll let CDA speak for himself...

Although, he has been known to frequent parks and folk music festivals where he allegedly shouts obscenities and throws bars of soap at the hippies.

??

CDA doesn't like hippies, there's a few other things as well (small animals and the like) but I'm not sure exactly what they are. I like your new look though :)

Jeez, book I had to read for school had marriage, childbirth, father-daughter incest, divorce, alcoholism, and many more adult issues.

Uh-oh. I'm in trouble then. I better hide my tie-dyed head scarves and flowy skirts. And thanks Ronny and leckert - it seems appropriate for the times. :)

Back on topic:

It seems sex is the hot-button, but I'm sure there are parents that get just as upset about graphic violence. In my experience (oh no, ad hominem again), the people who get most upset about sex in books are the same people who are against sex education and talking about birth control with teens. But that's a whole other topic already covered in one of Moto's threads.

Likewise - all in the one book too! Montana 1948.

Yup. I read that one for school. I think I'm going to add Cracking India to my TBB (to be bought) list for when I have money again. I love to read controversial books and decide whether it is merited. Usually I vote No.

Hmmm let's see. In 8th grade - meaning I was 14 - we read Martin & Victoria (Danish book) It had actual sex in it, though I don't remember how graphic. Even earlier in 7th or 6th grade our teacher read Kun en Pige (Only a Girl) to us, and that had sex in it too and we were either 12 or 13.

[sarcasm]
Of course I'm damaged for life...
[/sarcasm]

In Gymnasium when I was 17 we read Roddy Doyle's The Snapper, which has this little unforntunate encounter that results in a 'snapper', an unexpected pregnancy. And since we're in Ireland the girls keeps it, even though the father is one of her dad's friends and more or less raped her (or at least took advantage of a very drunk young woman). *gasp* The horror!

The parents need to get over themselves, when the kids are 16-17 they will long since have realised what sex is, and if they haven't it's probably because sex is taboo in their home and they probably shouldn't be venturing out in public at all.

I find it hilarious how some people think that by shutting up school teachers they can make a 'problem' go away.

:D Jemima, I read "The Snapper" too and I still remember the scene where Sharon is at the pub with her girlfriends and vomits into her purse!

Jemima,
i haven't traveled abroad, but friends who have say that that is one big difference between Scandinavian countries and the US. Motion pictures which involve nudity and sexual activities are acceptabe for the whole family where you are, but are "R" rated over here in the US and are for adults only. That seems to be true across the whole US; we are much more strait-laced as a Country.
