Just wondering if anyone has read that book before. I read and I was kind of left in the dark. I didn't understand why Sula was the way she was and why she betrayed her best friend. I could understand from the aspect of how her mother lived her life, but why sleep with your best friend's husband and act as if its cool cause he meant nothing? I don't know was Sula trying to see if her friend would choose one over the other or what. Also, throughout the book fire is used a lot for so many things. I can understand why the mother burnt her son, I didn't think it was neccessary but I think I knew why she did it but I don't understand why Sula's mother just walked right into the fire and Sula's grandmother look at Sula as if she had something to do with it. Also, Sula's grandmother identified Sula and Niel as the same person and I don't understand that.

Sula

SULA is a catalyst She got out of the Bottoms (which used to be the Top) and commes back w/knowledge of the outside world. Thus she is contaminated and her nature was fed by outside influences. Sexually she is promiscuous and doesn't think she did anything wrong cuz it was 'just sex'
SULA is a very very complicated book and is full of messages about life for poor Af. Ams. of the time.

May I suggest you GOOGLE 'SULA' and/or toni morrison and you will find more answers to your questions. Too many for me to post here.

ENJOY
