So far from what I know, here are the most popular book stores in the America:

Walden Books
Books a Million
Barnes and Noble

Thats all I could find right now, so keep on adding updates if you feel like it, because for now, this post is pretty much useless lol because there's so little information. Please Help by adding more info.

Well, there's Borders too and Amazon for the online shoppers.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I am to believe that Walden books went out of business. I no longer have a Walden books anywhere near me.

There's also a handful of Half-price books in my area. This is a used bookshop.

ETA: I looked up Waldenbooks and they are in fact still in business. Barnes and Noble and Borders are much bigger and I think soon enough, they will slowly start to disappear.

We were at one of the malls in Wichita back in July, and I saw a Waldenbooks. It looked pretty pathetic too, and the absence of B Dalton's at the other end of the mall was just tragic. I suppose the opening of a Borders on the west side a few years ago, was just too much...The east side of Wichita has two B&N, a Borders, 8th Day Books, and several UBS. One of those eastside UBS has a west store now too, but there's always been far fewer bookstores on the West side than on the East...all part of the East vs West 'feud' that's been in place since the town was founded in the 1800's:rolleyes:

Yeah, all the B. Daltons (which is B&N affiliated) in San Antonio closed down about 5 years ago. My first favorite bookstore when I was little was a B. Dalton in the mall. It was small and narrow and had a second floor (which was NOT handicapped accessible unfortunately) - but it was lots of fun for a small little girl).

But yeah, we don't have a BaM in San Antonio or Austin (Texas in general?)... but the big ones are the same as others mentioned:
Barnes & Noble
Borders
Half Price Books
Walden Books (although I haven't seen one in awhile)

we have walden books all over the place in NC, i just recently moved from winston salem to greensboro and there's one in each of those malls. i don't really see any b. dalton's though which is barnes and noble's version of walden books. i know there's one in buffalo, where i used to live, but i think B&N are just doing campus bookstores as their subsidieries now.

i generally prefer going to used bookstores...

I'm going to go ahead and second the nomination for Powells.

I'm not sure why, but I've never dealt with Powells at all, even back in the days they had those huge catalogs and everything was done by snailmail. It would be fun to have Trump's checkbook for an afternoon visit to their brick and mortar store...

The TOP bookstores in the US are independently owned, not part of a big chain. I shop at Micawber's in Saint Paul.

Way back when B&N was one store in NYC. You had to be a register member to get the B&W book listing for that month- this is before the grand expansion of stores throughout American. I was a member back then and have remain a good customer since.

Tattered Cover Book Store in Denver is pretty famous. I grew up there an although I never went, I'm ashamed to say, my sister loves that place.

Generally amazon is my source of choice.
