I'm so excited about this!
I finally read the graphic novel this summer and I just absorbed it over a weekend. Such a brilliant piece and yeah, it's definitely one of the greatest novels ever (not just graphic).
Saw it yesterday!!! I'm am thrilled. It's definitely the best Moore comic to film adaptation. So so pleased. My boyfriend who also read the graphic novel also loved it.
My book club sent me the graphic novel for free and my son says it's very good and I plan to read it after him.I will be seeing the movie next week but I have not heard good reviews on it.
I went last night to see it.I liked that the actors were not super famous. It reminded me of the originals back in my day:whistling:.Jackie Earle Haley (Rorschach),my favorite acting in the movie.
Me too! It really helped you get into the movie and the characters without thinking about the actors. Sometimes I can't completely enjoy a movie just because I sit there thinking, "Ugh... I can't stand Ben Stiller [Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson] ... I wish he wasn't in this."
However... whenever I see Patrick Wilson (Night Owl II), I think about his character in Hard Candy :shudders:
I thought the guys who played Rorschach and the Comedian were pretty good. Jeffrey Dean Morgan looks like Robert Downey, Jr. gone to seed. I loved the credit sequence set to the Dylan song, it was my fave part of the movie.
I was surprisingly non-disappointed with it. Sure it stuck so closely to the book both in plot, appearance and even soundtrack that the point of making a movie of it was pretty much lost (
except for the ending, but it worked, even if I really missed the "I DID IT!" scene
), and sure some of the actors were less than great; whether that's due to ability or because they're supposed to be acting like comic book characters - more so than they do in the actual comic, IMO - I'm not sure. I really missed the Black Freighter story, but of course there's only so much they can squeeze in, and it is secondary.
But it was entertaining without sacrificing too much of the original idea (
I liked the prominent feature of the Shelley quote at the end, undermining Veidt's triumph
), it had one or two jaw-droppingly well-done scenes, and well... it worked. Not fantastic, not remotely how I would have done it, but not Spider-Man 3-style embarrassing either - though I have to wonder how much of it makes sense to those who haven't read the book.
I went to see it yesterday, and I loved it. I knew nothing about the story as I haven't read the comic, and I thought the plot was very well explained and it made perfect sense to someone who was a total stranger to it.
I also love Jeffrey Dean Morgan (the Comedian) although the Comedian itself is not a very likable character...
I'm really looking forward the the special edition DVD of Watchmen as it will have The Black Freighter woven in through the movie... it will also include a documentary type thing of Hollis' book (Under the Hood). We can all watch these things now by getting the Black Freighter/Under the Hood DVD... but I prefer to wait for the awesome DVD that will probably be out for Christmas time.
