Just wondering if anyone knows of a good (preferably free) provider who allows you to have your own domain? I'm thinking about creating a website and need to sort out where to host it. I'd prefer not to have too many pop ups though.

Thanks

Martin, if people giving me this information is construed as advertising please could you delete this thread - thanks.

Nope, allowed.

Can't help you, though. All I know is GeoCities, or something like that.

Cheers, Martin

Erm Lahondas, I think that may be construed as advertising though!

But no thanks, I didn't study Computing for 6 years and not learn how to construct my own site, though I prefer to create it from scratch writing my own code , rather than using a program :)

I only know of friendly image hosters, but in case no one else has any better suggestions, you could take a look here...
http://www.free-webhosts.com/

They have reviews and notes on what ads you'd have to put up with. But you'll only get webspace, not a domain. But it's not really that much money a year to buy your own domain.

You'd need to buy the domain name at about £20 for two years, for a .co.uk address, and then either pay for hosting which is about another £20 a year. Or you get free hosting and then pay for redirection. You should have hosting with your ISP account.

Or you could look into getting a subdomain, which is less money.

We use Web-Mania.com, but I don't know the details of what it costs as it's my boyfriend paying the bills.

Thanks Litany,

I've seen a couple for about £20 - £25 a year which look ok - don't have an ISP at the moment (we'll obviously we do otherwise we couldn't log on  but it doesn't belong to us - we don't pay for it so can't host anything)

I'm going to check out those links you gave, may look into a sub domain. Last time I looked at doing this was 5 years ago and it cost £200 per year to have your own domain

I think it's worth shelling out the money. It's not really that expensive anymore, and you'll get a decent address and a better service. Plus lots of fun email addresses. And you won't have to put up with ads.

we have our own server. isp. yes, and we have unlimited subdomains...emails....n more

we used catalog.com, which was $85 per year for domain plus hosting, great plan. I think its a bit more expensive now, but well worth the money. Great support and one of the cheapest plans out there.

Did you find anything yet.

If not, look here.

You can even have a page for free, but it'll have adds.

Cheers, Martin
