What Are You?

I'm a Lutheran Christian, but I am also kind of a mystic. I believe I'm psychic and I'm liberal and open-minded, but I believe very strongly in my God.

Atheist, though one of my favorite places long ago used to be amongst all of the people in church. The sun coming through stained glass, the music, fragrant and clean people in beautiful clothes, children, community... What's not to like? But I never did believe all the hocus pocus and magical thinking, even when I was a child. Last Fri my child was invited to a Christmas pageant at the local "megachurch". He and I went to this and during intermission, we stood in a large, modern fellowship hall and had a glass of punch while not a single person came up to speak with us or to extend a hand. He was hurt, but I suspected it would be that way. It's mostly a family, culture thing and those who fancy themselves as justified are often oblivious to the world around them. That said, I would never say or do anything to take a person's "faith" away. But I might try to help them see that nothing bad and lots of good will happen when they shuck that way of thinking and really start to live in faith.

I don't know if I'd go so far as to call myself an atheist, but I suppose I should. It's not that I don't want to believe in God or whatever, it's just that I haven't seen enough evidence to convince me that I should.

Aqua, can you explain to me what agnostic means? I'm fascinated by the different types of Christianity (is it a from of Christianity?). As an outsider, it's all very confusing! And Val, how does being a Lutheran Christian differ from being simply Christian?

Agnostic
Pronunciation: ag-'näs-tik, &g-
Function: noun

A person who holds the view that any ultimate reality (as God) is unknown and probably unknowable; broadly : one who is not committed to believing in either the existence or the nonexistence of God or a god.

Lutheran is a denomination. It seperates me from being Catholic, Baptist, Presbyterian, whatever. It's not a very strict denomination--my pastor knows that I'm bi and he says he welcomes homosexuals and bisexuals to the church--but it's not one that gets a lot of recognition. People hear "Protestant" and think about Baptists more than Lutherans, and Lutheran is extraordinarily different than Baptist.

Grew up in a Missouri-Synod Lutheran home and attended an affiliated elementary school. Taught to pray by a United Methodist grandmother, learend Mormonism from a great dad. Have a profound respect for Catholicism by attending a Catholic high school. Now a dedicated agnostic with atheistic impulses gleaned from various readings, past experiences, as well as the incisive wit of more than a handful of dedicated and earnest teachers and professors. I'm not one who hates others who are religious, I'd just as easily put my kids in private schools as well as public ones. I also enjoy theological discussions with religious people. :)
