Good Question. I think this might vary with different readers since some are naturally faster readers than others. Both types of reading you mention are useful and necessary skills according to the reading project. For me, I tend to read fast and have to force myself to slow down and 'smell the roses' so I don't miss important details. Part of 'growing up' as a reader is learning which project calls for which type of reading skills, and adjusting accordingly.
Excellent point-it doesn't matter if you fly through ten books a month. If you don't know them as well as someone who read two books, you are just reading inefficiently.
Reading at a fast rate and being able to remember everything on the page is quite a skill. I read pretty fast, but I often have to re-read certain sections of a book just to keep up with what's going on. But between those two options, I'll go with reading slow. I always try to do just that so I can remember what's going on, but for whatever reason I get impatient and start reading faster.
