Woman Arrested In Theft Of Library Books, DVDs

Maria Natar Accused Of Stealing More Than 2,000 Books, DVDs From Area Libraries

UPDATED: 5:57 pm PDT September 7, 2011

CARLSBAD, Calif. -- Carlsbad police Wednesday announced the arrest of a woman suspected of stealing a large amount of books and DVDs from several San Diego County libraries.
According to the Carlsbad Police Department, 44-year-old Maria Natar was arrested Tuesday after officers served a search warrant on her Vista home. Inside, police said they found more than 2,000 library books and DVDs that were taken from Carlsbad and county public libraries.
Police said the value of the stolen books is more than $5,000.
"Carlsbad library representatives noticed a significant loss of library books between March and July of 2011, and reported the missing books to the police department. Library representatives also reported the suspicious activities of library patron, Maria Natar, which lead the police department to the residence in Vista and the subsequent arrest," said a Carlsbad police detective.
Carlsbad police are working to sort the books and DVDs and plan to return the items where they belong.

Hoard them!

What was the name of that little dude here that amassed like 1500 books over a summer?

I ended up throwing them into the county dumpster. About 400-500 books. 70's self-help, inspirational, outdated reference, etc. They will be missed by nobody except maybe historians.

Too bad you don't journal. My oldest daughter uses heinous paperbacks as journals. Uses the pages as a backdrop for her own thoughts. Still, that would be a LOT of journals to fill:lol:

That would annoy me to be writing over black text. I'd have to use a red sharpie or some nonsense like that. If it was light gray, I could see it but not black. Anyhoo, if I journaled, I'd just buy a journal. With blank pages.

That was my take on it too. But several years ago I read a book about women and writing that talked about how women used discarded books of their fathers, husbands, or brothers to use for 'commonplace books.' They'd paste clippings or write directly over the original text, creating personal books that contained what mattered most to them. I wish I could remember the title of that book; I want to read it again. I'm afraid it was in the list of the one year I've misplaced in the last ten. Guess that means I'll have to re-read a few potential candidates:innocent:

Read faster.
Skim.
Read first chapters.
Read first, or last, sentences of paragraphs.
Do page 69 test.
Be ruthless about dropping books of no interest.
Trust one's intuition based on titles, authors, suject matter, blurbs.
Stack the TBRs, least interesting (Who cares?) at the bottom.
Read reviews recognaize baloney, and decide.
Figure out why you are reading.
Figure out why you have so many in the first place.
Have an achievable goal.
Narrow the genres of interest, then do the above again.
Read the best.
Read for variety.
Neglect the trash.
Ditch the losers.
Exercise, stay healthy, and hope. :)
Stay off the Net.
Avoid forums.

Says the man with 10,000 books in his house. All bought and paid for legally, I might add. :flowers:

But there are two of us. And not quite 10,000. :)

Close enough...We're studying rounding this morning:lol:
Between the two of you, you probably have at least 200 years worth of reading material. Easily. Without double dipping. :flowers:

 re rounding.

And 200 years? Who can do such arithmetic?

But yes, that's why do the best first and ignore trash.

Police Find Weapons Stash In Home Of Accused Book Thief

Maria Nater Allegedly Stole Thousands Of Books From Local Libraries

POSTED: 12:19 pm PDT September 16, 2011

UPDATED: 1:10 pm PDT September 16, 2011

SAN DIEGO -- Carlsbad police said they found a large number of firearms and other weapons inside the home of a woman accused of stealing thousands of library books.
According to a search warrant obtained by 10News, Carlsbad police raided Maria Nater's Vista home nearly two weeks ago and seized 43 firearms, including assault rifles, pistols and a set of brass knuckles.
Police also confiscated multiple library cards, DVDs and more than 2,000 stolen library books, most of which came from the Carlsbad City Library.
Authorities told 10News Nater would load up dozens of books on carts and simply wheel them right out to her car without anyone suspecting a thing.
However, police said in July, Nater and her 7-year-old son left the library with a cart full of books. When the alarm went off, she proceeded to check them out.
Soon after, police began investigating Nater and learned she was selling the stolen books on Amazon.com
10News visited Nater at her home, and she said, "I'm not going to discuss the case."
Steve Britton, who lives next door, said his wife saw police at Nater's house and initially had no idea why.
"Not anything I suspected at all," Britton said.
Britton and neighbor Manuel Campos both described Nater as a friendly woman who, for the most part, stays to herself.
Nater remains free on $40,000 bail after she pleaded not guilty to felony theft charges last Friday.
"I don't know. I don't believe it," said Campos.
"Kind of shocking, huh?" asked 10News reporter Preston Phillips.
"Yeah," Campos replied.
If convicted, Nater could face up to three years in prison.
