What's so great about...

the Da Vinci Code? I gather this is a hot potato here, but I'm curious. What is so great about it? I'm probably one of ten people in the world who haven't read it. (I was also one of the last people to start reading the Harry Potter books. I'm suspicious of wildly popular books, fearing some kind of cult brainwashing results from reading them.)

its overrated, its a nice thriller, but with all the people making so much noise about the conspiracy theory around which the plot developes, about that have been a lot of better researched and writed books.
but since this is a novel everyone is an expert now.

if you take it as what it is, a plain thriller, its quite entertaining, but if you are going to turn into a believer, you should do some extra research.

It's brain popcorn :)

It's fun and it's silly. Like a Hollywood block buster! Don't expect to much and turn off your brain and you might enjoy it!

... isnt that right stewie? ;) :D

Its pulp trash, but I enjoyed it nonetheless - its certainly not as bad as some people would have you believe (points at Stewart behind his back) :D

I'd try and reserve judgement until youve read it yourself, cant stand all those people who hate something just because its popular and lots of people like it ... duh! maybe thats because its good!! :p

It's fun to read but don't make the mistake to read any other books by Dan Brown. Just don't.

I have to agree on this point - his first two books particularly (Digital Fortress and ... whatever the other one is called) are very weak compared to his writing in Da Vinci - you can see him developing the style, but there is probably a good reason he was never renowned for publishing them.

Okay, I'll read it. Do I have to buy it? or should I put my name on the library list, which means I'll probably get it in September 2006 with the last three pages torn out?

I loved the Da Vinci Code, and a cousin-in-law of mine who isn't a reader enjoyed the book tremendously. It's fun and very entertaining.

Given that you may not enjoy it, get it from the library. I can fill you in the last 3 pages.

I haven't read it yet, although I plan to read it so I can find out what the fuss is about.

By the way, I haven't even read any of the Harry Potter books yet... and I don't plan to either :p

I'm over halfway through it at the moment, and while I don't particularly like his writing style, it's an entertaining enough read. I'm enjoying finding out about the Holy Grail theories (though I gather some are wrong?).

Is Dan Brown American or English? Because he needs to sort out his "Britishisms" - an English person would not refer to the "emergency brake" in a car - it's the handbrake.

I finished the book, but didn't consider it "high literature" or anything. The concepts it presented were thought provoking and intriguing and kept me turning pages. However, the action was irritating because they ALWAYS had someone chasing them, inches away, and ALWAYS slipped out of their grasp using their astonishing cleverness and some very suspiciously well-timed coincidences. It was like pulp fiction in that respect. I overdosed on the cliff hangers at the end of each chapter.

I enjoyed it. It was a nice "beach read" -- in that it's fun and entertaining, and not terribly thought-provoking. I think the reason that a lot of people don't like it is that Brown made the mistake of publicizing how extensively he researched, so any chink in the research armor is glaringly obvious (and apparently, there are a LOT of inaccuracies). I think Americans like it because we don't really know much about day-to-day life in Europe, so it's easy to slide the errors by us. But for people who LIVE in Paris, or in England, it's a whole different ball game.

Just consider it the same as LOTR, and don't expect that there IS a Middle Earth! :D

I read it sometime back and liked it. I am not saying its a bad book, but its not good as people claim. Its over-rated and the hype is unnecessary.
I guess people are going all ga-ga over it because they like all "secrety" stuff and they like talking about the famous painitings which have a 'secret' meaning or purpose.
It makes for a good kitty-party conversation, doesn't it? :D

Library list.
I don't think the last three pages torn out, in this case, will make any difference.

The people who believe it are the best. A favourite thread title of mine, from another forum, was I don't want to be a Catholic anymore. :D

so far, nothing I've seen here is making me want to read it. I guess it can wait until I've finished all the other books I have stacked up or on the library waiting list.

the Da Vinci Code is definetly one of the best reads out there. overated? maybe, but that's really a matter of self-oppinion...
the da vinci code truely is one of the funnest, and most entertaining reads out there.
