What's up with Firefighter Arson?

novella

This is totally a weird topic, but it’s happening in my life right now.

What’s up with firefighter arson? This is such a common phenomenon, I’m beginning to suspect a huge number of volunteer firefighters and even full-time paid firefighters are closet arsonists.

Just this month the firefighter living next door to my friend set his house on fire. (Started in couch with chemical starter at 4 in the morning; he was first on the scene and called my friend to warn her.) Was this for the thrill, for insurance, to be a hero, for pyromaniac glee?

Then last week a firefighter in my town was caught after setting a blaze in an empty storefront, which put a guy I know out of business.

These arsonists are often first on the scene. One guy died in his own fire last year around here.

Isn’t this a sicko situation? Do you think they’re arsonists before they become firefighters or the reverse?

I've met one firefighter recently. We spent all night putting out matches on our tongues. Then he set the whole matchbook on fire.

So, I would say, yeah, they're just naturally pyros.

Oh, Ashlea, setting yourself on fire for fun? You must be pretty bored down in that big empty state!

That's the problem with bars. I don't do pool or darts much, and they don't provide enough toys to make your own fun.
