Why Does Life Swirl

"Why do the winds blow?"
was the opening sentence
in a book on the weather.

I had expected some prominence
given to more noticeable aspects,
storms, clouds, rain,
stifling heat, freezing cold,
thunder and lightning.

But the air itself
seems the least of all,
generally calm
only occasionally noticeable
mainly when it blows.

We live in the air
and have a hard time seeing it,
the harbinger of change,
can't escape it,
and only with difficulty
look at it
through careful study
in meteorology.

We live in our life
and remember
its major events, the happenings
births, weddings, bereavements,
happiness, sadness
travel, cruises, hikes, flights
friends, relatives, enemies.

We live in life, as in the air
but look at it only seldom,
and only with difficulty
get outside of ourselves.

Why do the winds blow?
Why does life swirl?
