The Grapes of Wrath is darn near biblical in meaning to me. I also enjoyed The moon is down which was one of his more unrecognized works. I would recommend it as it is a shorter read. Didn't think much of The winter of our discontent. Just couldn't get into it for anything.
An inspirational WWII Polish story would be the tale of the Orzel which escaped under guard and later on, sank a German troop ship. Read about it in Churchill's first volume of WII history, a good story that not a lot of people know about.

Slightly annoyed doesn't mean unwilling to read the book. I went through a big Koontz phase about twelve years ago. Intensity is hist best imho.
