Teaching Christianity in the Public Schools...

The separation that you should very much be in favor if you don't want your church tainted. Why should it need to be written into the Constitution? There are any number of examples of things that are not expressed by the U.S. Constitution but have still become basic rights. Maybe this will help...

Teaching Christianity in the Public Schools...

I am also American and have never met such a teacher and I absolutely believe they exist. Generally they would be at Christian schools but those aren't the problem or even the issue in this thread for that matter. It's the ones who do it in a public setting which is paid for by tax dollars and...

Teaching Christianity in the Public Schools...

My thoughts exactly. This is something I've had to wrestle with ever since I became a parent and time after time I've seen examples where many of the maladjusted kids are overly protected. I agree. The problem is in the U.S. that word has been perverted by right-wing radio and other media...

Suggestions: December 2008 Book of the Month

That is non-fiction and it is a very good choice. I nominated it for a different month but it got no love whatever. I read it already but I would like to see it discussed anyway. I liked that one a lot too.

Lou Dobbs; War on the Middle Class

That's pretty good. I neglect The Onion for months at a time. I should check it out more regularly. I should add that I don't always disagree with the guy but I just find his constant appeals to the Plebians distasteful to my Patrician snobbery.

Lou Dobbs; War on the Middle Class

I haven't read it, won't be and your synopsis sounds pretty much like what I would expect. Dobbs simple-minded populism bores me to death.

Sure if by "like Al Gore" you mean in the very narrow sense that they are both hypocrites. However one gets rich selling/promoting ultimately beneficial ideas while the other profits when people get killed. It's the difference between a pick pocket and a violent bank robber.

    Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

From the sound of it that very well may have been enough in his mind to make things work. Many other flaws though than just that. That he apparently was "on cordial terms" with Putin for attempting to rebuild Russia seems like a contradiction but I suppose his love of his country was stronger...

    Real-life Authors As Characters

I just got My Uncle Oswald by Roald Dahl and according to wikipedia the book has several authors as characters. Joyce, Proust, and Conrad to name a few.

    Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

But thanks for the link just the same. Much more thorough. I thought it was interesting to hear what his biographer had to say about him. Apparently not nearly the ideal anti-Soviet stalwart many people believe he was.

He's a piece of work. Speaking of France and the French....In this book I'm reading it mentions Richard Perle as being this rabid French-bashing, chickenhawk soaring, war profiteering, conflict of interest-having.....guy. Meanwhile he maintains a home in the south of France. "Pure balls."...

    Do you take book notes?

I usually don't with fiction, but with the non-fiction I read I use asterisks on the margins and maybe a few words to remember an idea.

It is possible to be French and not know he existed. It is just funnier that way. It's just strange that you chose to write he did not exist when he most certainly did. This with the Internet at your fingertips. Rostand fictionalizing someone who existed really doesn't matter. The point is...
