The Gulag Archipelago - Alexander Solzhenitsyn
Reading about prison conditions in the U.S.S.R. is a good reminder of how miserable life can be simply by being born at a bad time. And then hopefully you feel better because you aren't one of those people.

I read that a few months ago myself and I'd give it the same rating. Two and a half stars if I could be more precise. It might be more fun if you live in the area the book is set, but by no means one of the better post-apocalypse books I've read.
Golden Age Vol. I? I've been tempted to buy that and the Secret History.. a few times but haven't done it. I've read the Lucious Shepard and James Patrick Kelly stories and liked them both fairly well. Lots of sort of non-genre writing authors in that book. Interesting. I bought American...
I think this is a good idea. Once a theme or genre can be agree upon we could nominate titles or authors fitting that criteria. Adding another step to funnel our way towards a specific book might help with participation.
The Living - Annie Dillard
Glamorama or Lunar Park - Bret Easton Ellis
The Third Policman - Flann O'Brien
The Rabbit Factory - Larry Brown
Perdido Street Station - China Mieville
Dead Souls - Nikolai Gogol
anything by Ian Banks except The Wasp Factory (already read it)
Summer of Night -...
It was bleak, no doubt about it. The indifference for the dog's life might have been because they were soldiers who were used to killing or, and I think this might have been what Bacigalupi was going for, humanity had changed so much that the dog to them would be similar to how we might view an...
Ted Chiang - science fiction and fantasy writer with very little published work; emotional, thoughtful topics; no two stories are remotely similar and about half of them are can be read for free on the web.
Any of the three Gregs (Bear, Benford or Egan) - less accessible hard-sf; genetic...
I looked for Tales of Pain and Wonder and they didn't have it. There were some other books by Kiernan but I didn't buy any. I did get Sarah Canary though in case it happens to win the poll.
Far future people have changed to not only survive in a radioactive and hostile world, but even thrive. Bacigalupi lived in or around a Montana mining town and this story was inspired by something he saw in that setting. Things in this distant future are very different.
Have I got the science fiction hook in you yet? I'm trying to expand my genre tastes into more horror and some fantasy with more short stories. Any suggestions besides that Caitlin Kiernan story? We head down to Portland this weekend at that means a trip to Powell's.
Look for new short story...
I'll be buying The Windup Girl as soon as it comes out in paperback. Bacigalupi is a good short story writer too. One of his better post-apocalyptic stories is in Wastelands: Stories of the Apocalypse.
