Jared Diamond: Guns, Germs, and Steel

I haven't read Guns, Germs, and Steel or Collapse, but I'm hoping to get around to reading at least one of them this year. I thoroughly enjoyed The Rise and Fall of the Third Chimpanzee - and was hoping to give that one a re-read over the next month or so. :)

    Alex Garland: The Coma

It's been so long since I read either of these books, that unfortunately I can't remember similarities. :o However I just want to second citystars19's recommendation - they are book great books. :D

    Ken Follett: World Without End

I agree about the characters in World Without End being too similar to characters in Pillars of the Earth. The problem I had with WWE, is that there really was no plot throughout the story - it was just one little scheme after another which got tiring oh-so-quickly. Also, I was quite...

    Recommend me a good book

Richard Montanari's books are quite good. I've read The Rosary Killers and The Skin Gods, and they were above-average thrillers.

    First book

Probably The Famous Five series, or Nancy Drew series when I was in primary school. I loved those books!

Help - no title no author - 2 dimensional universe kids book?

I don't think this is it, as it's not a kids book, but Flatland by Edwin Abbott deals with a 2D world.

    Richard Montanari

Has anyone read any books by this fellow? I've read The Rosary Girls, and recently finished The Skin Gods. I have to say, I was quite impressed. His work does seem to be a cut above so many of the other books in the genre. :)

    The Bilgerat Critic

And burps and belches aren't dependant expressions? In some cultures, they are seen as complimentary. Yeah, yeah....I'll go make like an atom and split, as well.

    Last seen...

Just saw I Am Legend. Completely different from the book. I think I would have enjoyed it if I hadn't read the book, as all I kept doing was comparing it.

Good books to help me show disdain for jury system?

How about How To Avoid Jury Duty? Or 150 Reasons Why I Can't Serve on Jury Duty?

do you keep track of the books you read?

I keep an Excel spreadsheet, but a few days ago I discovered LibraryThing, so I'm using that as well. However, from what people are saying, Goodreads may be worth considering as well! ;) Edit: Right, I'm now on Goodreads as well. If anyone would like to add me as a 'friend', my username is...

Good books to help me show disdain for jury system?

    I don't have any suggestions, but I think it's a hilarious idea. :D

Best ultra-violent, funny, emotionally involving, tragic, cynical, intelligent...

How about The Demon, by Hubert Selby Jnr? I wouldn't say it had much humour in it though.

Do You Get Mentally Fatigued When Reading?

I think it depends on the book. If it's easy and fast-paced, then not really; anything remotely heavy though, can be quite taxing.

What did you read in December?

Not much: Finished After You'd Gone by Maggie O'Farrell, I Am Legend by Richard Matheson, and Blaze by Richard Bachman. I'm about to start The Drowned World by JG Ballard.

Ever broken up with someone over books?

Nope, it sounds a bit silly! My husband doesn't read at all, and that doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Should I get "The Golden Compass"?

I voted 'Not bad'. I read it after hearing all the hype about the series, and I wasn't all that impressed by it. Then again, I'm not a huge fan of fantasy.
