Or before you go as far as retiring it examine why it's not getting anywhere. Eventually someone is going to give you some constructive feedback on what you need to do to your writing. Listen to that. You don't necessarily have to agree with the advice or even act on it but if you're not...
I lied.
Or more accurately I forgot that I also hadn't finished the first book in The Fionavar Tapestry by Guy Gavriel Kay. Just couldn't get into it. Even after trying a couple times.
Why would I overlook digs at those who beg for them? ;)
The Ancestor's Tale, that's the book that's available as a remainder in softcover for $12.99 right now. It looks good I'm just not sure I'd pay that much attention to it.
Ahhh I didn't know Rupert owned Harper Collins. I don't like the idea of anyone's politics influencing what is available to read. It's worse when it's him. Or those of his ilk.
The Blind Watchmaker and The Selfish Gene come very highly recommended from a friend of mine. I have yet to pick them up though. Currently Dawkins' book on evolution - The Story of Evolution I think it is called and I'm too lazy to check is available as a remainder. I do find the topic...
The Writers Market is available in Canada. Including copies targeted to Canada. Avoid self-publishing and vanity publishing. If you want more of a reason to avoid vanity publishing beyond what Stewart has said read Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco. That'll teach ya. After having spoken to...
There are probably fantastic Chinese novels that haven't been translated. Why not start with them? The cynic in me, the realist really, thinks the child angle is nothing more than a gimmick.
I disagree. I think it may be a translation or a language issue. For instance maybe the 'flow' is lost in the translation, or, more likely, it just doesn't work in english. In english it's awkward.
The only book I've started that I haven't finished is Moby Dick. That was around 15 years ago and I will give it another shot one day. I had almost stopped reading The Great Gatsby but I'm glad I finished just for the sake of finishing and for the ending. It was easily the best part of the...
Life of Pi off the top of my head. Atwood, also, off the top of my head. The Handmaids Tale and Oryx and Crake specifically. Jack London maybe? As for stereotypical suggestions:
Lord of the Flies
Fifth Business
The Stone Angel
Of Mice and Men
Nineteen-Eightyfour
The Chrysalids...
I've leafed through Women. Mostly searching for the sex scenes. I liked the style and the way he handled the content. I hate to admit I had never heard of Bukowski before chancing upon that novel. Just one more author to add to the list...
hardback or softback novels? Depends. I usually prefer trade paperbacks but for some authors I collect Everyman Library hardcovers. I'll also pick up hardcover remainders when I can.
Pen or pencil? Pencil.
Paper clip or staple? Depends. Usually staple.
Holding a book in hand or laying it...
