I took my hiatus from here earlier this year for two reasons. The first was the silly locking of two major threads in General Discussion. I still miss them but I'm over it. The second reason was there were too many people posting poorly. Just dumb shit, terrible topics, obvious lack of...

Who do you trust for book recommendations?

How could I forget?! While I don't exactly trust them I always take a good look at those listed for prizes and the winners. Nobel, Pulitzer, Booker, Giller, etc. Libra6Poe makes a good point too, recommendations by respected authors is a good place to look.

Hate to post again right away but I had to say I don't think this is a good point. If someone honestly thinks they can post 1337 speak on a book forum they've had a serious lack of judgement or just not bright at all. It's a book forum for crying out loud!! :(

And I'm not gonna change. The response is appropriate to the initial post. Not always, but mostly. In fact so mostly that it's completely worth the risk. Intelligent well mannered people are more likely to communicate in an intelligent and pleasent manner. Way too much time and...

Hands down I need to know!

I don't read enough Fantasy to formulate a fair opinion but I do know a handful of devout fantasy readers who mention the following names often: George R.R. Martin Stephen Donaldson Guy Gavriel Kay Jack Whyte

Who do you trust for book recommendations?

I have a couple people I work with I trust for recommendations that I usually follow-up on. I'll usually search a book or author here then Amazon to see if it's worth pursuing. Working in a bookstore allows me to check things out at my leisure. Around here I'll pretty much check out any...

    Robert Jordan: Wheel of Time

Have you seen the covers to Fantasy written by women lately? The only difference between many of them and Romance novel covers is the dwarf standing beside the broad man with wavy blonde hair and pecs that span unaturally wide. Big boobs are not gender specific in Fantasy. ;)

I haven't read this series and have no intention of starting but I do know several who have and they all say the same thing: Past book three it's just not good.

Difficulty in discussing literature on book-related forums?

This will sound silly but Jacques Villeneuve, yes the race car driver, has a little 'Lifestyle' section on his site where he reviews crap he likes. Typically it's pointless but there was a British author that he had read and wanted to find similar authors to read. That author sounded like he...

The situation is simple. The poster came in and disrespected us with that incoherent dribble. I'm willing to bet the poster speaks fluent english, at least average fluent english, but is extremely lazy. Do I feel better having to deal with people like that!? No! People like this are all...

    Bookcovers

I was going to post that cover of Middlessex AquaBlue. Another Lolita cover: That's the copy I own. I love those lips. Angelina Jolie has nothing on those! Sharpen you up for a bit of the old ultra-violence. And the rest of the Vintage trade paperback printings of the...

    Art Of War Anyone???

It's on the list of books to be read. I was loaned a copy once before but I wasn't ready for it so I didn't get very far. There are so many translations that I'd like to know which are the superior ones. An edition with useful endnotes/footnotes would be nice. Art of War is one of those...
