    Re-reading books

I tend to re-read novels when I feel I haven't fully understood or have missed something, I find it gives me greater understanding, but I do agree, there are so many books out there I want to read and haven't yet done so!

    New Years resolutions?

To try and live better and healthier - less chocolate and booze, more early nights and soft drinks! And to read more. As always :)

The today I'm irritated by __________ thread

Today I'm irritated by the mice in my room, and their ability to keep me awake for hours on end with their persistent scrabbling and food hunting.

    Sylvia Plath: The Bell Jar

Haha, fair enough, was just curious :) Well done on reading the letters and journals... heavy duty stuff! I own the journals but have yet to make my way through them. My interest in Plath has been greatly aided by having an expert lecturer who can throw light on even the most complicated Plath...

    Sylvia Plath: The Bell Jar

Out of interest, which biography did you read? I agree, reading a biography beforehand really helps you get the full grasp of the autobiographical nature of the novel. I read Bitter Fame by Anne Stevenson, a notoriously anti-Plath biography, but despite this I still think Plath is wonderful!

Dear Ms. Wilde, I'm glad you enjoyed reading them! I can assure you that although The Great BAR Blog Software Meltdown of 2008 did put me off posting I am bound to resume sooner or later :) I am also holding back as I'm writing essays about books and I don't want to risk plagiarising...

    Margaret Atwood: Cat's Eye

I'm glad to have found this thread as I have just finished reading Cat's Eye for the first time, and it hasn't left me for days. I agree that the narrative shifts in style as Elaine grows up - part of me feels that this is representative of how we feel about things as children and how we...

The today I'm irritated by __________ thread

Today I'm irritated by my complete and utter inability to write a single sentence of any essay without changing it at least five times and even then not feeling satisfied.

    What books have you hated?

I hated Clarissa by Samuel Richardson. I read it for my degree and it was not only one of the most expensive novels I've bought but also one of the most tedious and boring.

Where are you? (in the book you are reading) - please read 1st post

I am in Toronto, on the patio of the Park Plaza Hotel Roof Garden sipping a Manhattan with a strangely attractive, somewhat older Hungarian art teacher....

    Mikhail Bulgakov

I'd really like to read something by Mikhail Bulgakov. I have a copy of Master and Margarita that I've tried to get into several times and failed - not because it's not interesting, the language and descriptions are fantastic but possibly a little dense (maybe the translation I'm reading?). One...

Could you recommend a poetry book?

I realise that the original post of this thread is quite old now, but I found Daisy Goodwin's anthologies to be an excellent way in to poetry. I have 101 Poems to Get You Through the Day (and Night) which was a gift from my parents before my second year at university. Goodwin splits the poems...

    Today I'm Happy because....

I'm happy because I've got a big teapot next to me full of rose tea which nearly makes up for the 3000 word Atwood essay I'm writing.... Nearly.
