As it's all quiet on the poetry front, I thought I'd bump this thread and see if there are any other poetry people out there!
This is my (current) favourite poem by Carol Ann Duffy (I'm quite the fan of hers actually :D)
Valentine
Not a red rose, or a satin heart,
I give you an...
Thought I'd re-open discussion here as it's been a few years! Any other Toni Morrison fans?
I've nearly finished 'Jazz' and it's unlike any book I've ever read before... the title and the music and the narrative are so linked together - it feels disjointed and edgy in places. From the above...
I think I average at about 5 books per month. I'm always surrounded by books, and have to be forcibly removed from bookshops to stop me from spending my entire student loan in them :D
I read:
Pig Tales - Marie Darrieussecq
Bear - Marian Engel
Woman Warrior - Maxine Hong Kingston
The Hunter - Julia Leigh
All really small books, all for uni, and loved them all :D
Absolutely LOVE Karen O... and the band generally.
I also like Kimya Dawson, Imogen Heap, Aretha Franklin, Etta James and I will ALWAYS love Dido... her music never fails to bring me comfort.
Any fans of Plath's poetry out there? I'm new to it, I had to pick a poem, any poem to write an essay on imagery (quite a broad range to pick from ) and I just couldn't pick.
My mum had bought me a collection of her poetry (selected by Ted Hughes) which I'd flicked through a couple...
I have a book that I keep my list for the year in :) It's something I've only just started but I'm really enjoying it! I like to see how many books I've read for discussion at university, and how many I've read for fun...the uni books are winning so far this year. Big time.
I agree 100% with both your comments. I was so excited after having read 'Curious Incident' and felt that this one really didn't live up to the same standard.
As mentioned, I did get through it quite quickly, it's certainly not difficult to read and it was amusing in places, and sad in places...
I've recently bought 'American Pastoral' by Philip Roth after seeing it recommended as one of his best on here, I'm also planning to read 'Lolita' after seeing what lively discussion it provoked on here!
Have you read 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time' by Mark Haddon? I know it was a big hit in the UK last year, but I would honestly recommend that one as the book that I just couldn't put down. I'm not a very fast reader or anything but I couldn't help but read that book in 6...
I just bought:
The Accidental - Ali Smith
Atonement - Ian McEwan
American Pastoral - Philip Roth
A Quiet Belief in Angels - R.J Ellory
And I shouldn't have because I won't have time to read them for absolutely ages:o
