Eddings is, in my opinion completely talentless. He churns out mind-numbingly repeditive books that contain the same plots, the same characters, the same "jokes" and the same general ideas. His books contain little to nothing that could be described as original. That's bad in one book, Eddings...
Okay people, current scores (I'm only listing those that have more than 5 points):
1) David Eddings (21)
2) JRR Tolkein (18)
3) GRR Martin (11)
4) Melanie Rawn (10)
=5) Steven Erikson (9)
=5) Raymond Fiest (9)
=5) Terry Goodkind (9)
=6) Marion Zimmer Bradley (8)
=6) Phillip Pullman...
Details - China Mieville, after reading this I found myself avoiding looking at carpets, walls and all kinds of other things. Really creeped me out.
Lull - Kelly Link, I do not understand this story at all, but I still loved it. Leaves one feeling woefully inadequate.
Mr Clubb and Mr Cuff...
Can't really speak for someone else with 100% confidence, but I think Litany meant that she finds the villians in the novel more interesting and enjoyable to read about. I had the same experiance with Rawn, but I love a great villian, so it's fine by me. :)
I know that this, or something similar, has been done before, but I hope to have a really comprehensive list by allocating points to authors on people's list according to their rank. So if everyone gave their top five authors, the first on the list gets 5 points, 2nd 4 points, et cetera down to...
Hey people, as has been commented this debate could go on and on. I don't hate Tolkein, I don't really hate LotR, but I find the worship status it has attained completely incomprehensiable.
(Allow me to apologise now for refering to people as "someone" etc, I don't want to have to trawl...
How can I say there is no plot?
Suppose it depends on your idea of what a plot is, but personnally I perfer something more challenging that A Dark Shadow is rising, we must quest though the lands to exploit his one weakness. We must preg* his inpregniable fortress and overcome many difficulties...
'Salem's Lot - Stephen King
I Am Legend - Richard Matheson
Dracula - Bram Stroker
Interview With the Vampire - Anne Rice
There's the four classic vampire books. All very different, but all very brilliant.
I even think the ideas Tolkien gets accredited with aren't all that original. Fantasy was around long before Tolkien, and I find a lot of it better than what he wrote.
His Dark Materials trilogy - loved
Neil Gaiman:
American Gods - quite good
Same with Caroline
Good Omens - really good...
The first book is incredably spooky, the atmosphere is perfect. It is fantasy and not horror, but some scenes were definately very very eerie. Still, I added it to the list as it was certainly a medievil setting and an excellent read as well.
I think they're much better than Donaldson's Covenant Trilogy and well worth checking out. Of course that's just me... but then again, I'm always right ;)
Everything by Theodore Sturgeon, the man is the defination of intelligent sci-fi, esspecially check out his short stories.
Roger Zelazny - The Lord of Light
Sheri S Tepper - Grass
Gene Wolfe - The Fifth Head of Cerberus
Things that have already been mentioned that I think you would like:
A Song of Ice and Fire - GRR Martin
Ash: A Secret History - Mary Gentle
The Worm Ouroboros - ER Eddison (you might find this a little hard to find)
My own additions:
The Once and Future King - TH White (can't believe...
I buy a couple of annual collections each year. Things like The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror, Best New Horror and Best New Sci-fi. I have a couple of collections of some authors works - Arther C Clake: The Collected Stories, HP Lovecraft: The Omibus, Clake Ashton Smith: The Emperor of Dreams...
I've read the first book of the series and definately plan to read the rest. It will propably take me a while to get round to it though because I have the US edition of the King's Dragon and I want to have the US editions of the rest. I'm picky about such things :)
