Short Stories

I only really read short stories if they're by an author I already know. Recently read the novella from Alastair Reynolds, Diamond Dogs and Turquoise Days, but that might not count. And before that, only recent ones that spring to mind are Iain M Banks - State of the Art and Michael Marshall Smith - What You Make It.
 
The only short stories I read are generally in analogies, but it's hard for sci-fi, the quality is either poor or it involves a world that I'm already supposed to know about from reading a series
 
I buy a couple of annual collections each year. Things like The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror, Best New Horror and Best New Sci-fi. I have a couple of collections of some authors works - Arther C Clake: The Collected Stories, HP Lovecraft: The Omibus, Clake Ashton Smith: The Emperor of Dreams and thingfs like that.
The only actual single author anthology that I have (that aren't some sort of retrospective) are Magic Terror by Peter Straub and Cities of Saints and Madmen by Jeff Vandermeer.

I never liked short stories until I ran across Robert Heinlein's The Past Through Tomorrow. Now, I'm more tolerant of them, but as a general rule, I prefer longer works so I can get to know the characters better.
 
I read once sci fi short stories by Orson Scott Card, but I can't remember the titles. It was very strange, you see life differently after that... :)
 
I am not a ig fan of short stories ... guess I like to spend time getting familliar with characters. Usually the short story ends before I actually feel comfortable with the characters or the plot. That being said... I do have some short stories from HP Lovecraft, I also have some short ghost stories from various authors and I have the two anthologies of the Valdemar series Mercedes Lackey and other authors.
 
well the only short stories ive ever read were in "the mammoth book of fantasy" and "ursula le guin's Tales of Earthsea" which were really amazing! :D
 
Since this is under SCIFI/Fantasy, I would guess you're looking for that type of short story. There were two anthologies just released from Mundania Press that contain these types of short stories. I liked them. You can get them electroncially or in print from http://www.mundania.com
 
I only have two collections of "sci-fi" short stories - The Complete Short Stories of JG Ballard and Beyond Lies the Wurb by Phillip K. Dick.

I used to read the stories in a magazine although I've forgotten the magazine's name. I typically found them boring though as I'd rather see sci fi than read it - it's so much easier to view some super-gadget and accept that it blips and bleeps than read about in the inner workings of it and, by what means of pneumatic or hydromatic genius, it produces those blips and bleeps.

Ballard just has to be read.
 
A thread about sci-fi short stories and no mention of Asimov? The man is the Godfather of the genre. ;) The first two (or three?) novels of the "Foundation" series are small collections of short stories, and Asimov wrote probably well over a hundred others. The soon-to-be-raped-by-the-movie-industry "I, Robot" is another essential read, which also consists of several related short stories.
 
Roger Zelazny is another reliable short story writer, particularly The Doors of His Face, the Lamps of His Mouth.

Harlan Ellison is more of an acquired taste: Repent, Harlequin! Said the Ticktockman is most noted. He was also a tremendous editor of anthologies, with Dangerous Visions being the benchmark for such collections in its time.

Gardner Dozois is another great editor of annual collections.

Cosmos Latinos sounds like my kinda thing! Interesting! Thanks, I think i'll stick that in my "to buy list" I always like to read something that comes from another culture. You get a really fresh view of things.
 
There's a magazine out called Realms of Fantasy. Each issue has about five short stories. They also include game reviews, art reviews, an occasional movie review as well as other articles. It's all Sci. Fiction and Fantasy. For the most part, it publishes some good stories and it introduces you to new authors.
