I wouldn't reccomend any of them to a person looking for something to start with in fantasy. They're all very good, but they're hardly light or easy to get into and diffenately don't have universal appeal.(apart from diskworld)
I would enjoy that. He has the most aggravating personnality. If you've ever read an interview with him you'll know what I mean.
And I think his books suck as well.
Hey Litany, I just wrote a review of Beauty today. Here
My first fantasy novel was Alice in Wonderland when I was a wee eight year old. The one that got me hooked on fantasy was Legend by David Gemmell.
My favourite series of books are Steven Erikson's Tales of the Malazan Book of the Fallen.
The Gormenghast trilogy is, in my humble opinion, far superior to Lord of the Rings. They are urban fantasy as opposed to epic. Think old crumbling castles etc. One thing you should be aware of is they are depresing and dark. They're are often described as boring as well. They are no easy read...
Melisande - The Kushiel's Legacy Trilogy, Jacqueline Carey
Melisandre - A Song of Ice and Fire, George RR Martin
Pryates - Memory, Sorrow and Thorn, Tad Williams
Lady Oonagh - The Sevenwaters Trilogy, Juliet Marillier
Richard of Northwoods - The Sevenwaters Trilogy, Juliet Marillier
Mr...
His best book, in my opinion, is one that was co-written by Neil Gaiman called Good Omens. It appealed to me a lot more than any of the diskworld novels.
In my humble opinion, Book of the New Sun is a Masterwork in every sense of the world. Gene Wolfe is an artist and a master of the craft. Read his books people!
His next book is called Iron Council and should be out sometime this summer. Like the Scar to Perdido Street Station, it will be a sequel set in the same world, but not a direct sequel.
I didn't think there was an anti-climax to the Scar, I found the ending excellent.
Bellis Coldwine = me. That was something that always struck me as I read, how similar our characters are.
Haven't read it but I was planning on picking it at some time because I enjoyed Revelation Space and Redemption Ark so much. Pity you were disappointed.
Darker Than You Think - Jack Williamson
Fevre Dream - George RR Martin
Elric - Micheal Moorcock
These are books that I think are similar to the ones you mentions, but do you have anything more specific that you enjoyed about them. Are you looking for thing with a horror aspect or the same...
You don't need to read the next book surely... I thought it was quite clear, it showed the two boys alive at the end and there's a chapter from Theon's point of view that describes what really happened. Where do problems arise?
