    Recommendations for a Fantasy "Newb"

I wouldn't reccomend any of them to a person looking for something to start with in fantasy. They're all very good, but they're hardly light or easy to get into and diffenately don't have universal appeal.(apart from diskworld)

    Terry Goodkind: Wizards First Rule

I would enjoy that. He has the most aggravating personnality. If you've ever read an interview with him you'll know what I mean. And I think his books suck as well.

    Recommendations for a Fantasy "Newb"

Hey Litany, I just wrote a review of Beauty today. Here My first fantasy novel was Alice in Wonderland when I was a wee eight year old. The one that got me hooked on fantasy was Legend by David Gemmell. My favourite series of books are Steven Erikson's Tales of the Malazan Book of the Fallen.

    The Gormenghast Novels

The Gormenghast trilogy is, in my humble opinion, far superior to Lord of the Rings. They are urban fantasy as opposed to epic. Think old crumbling castles etc. One thing you should be aware of is they are depresing and dark. They're are often described as boring as well. They are no easy read...

    Terry Pratchett

His best book, in my opinion, is one that was co-written by Neil Gaiman called Good Omens. It appealed to me a lot more than any of the diskworld novels.

    Favorite Fantasy Novels

In my humble opinion, Book of the New Sun is a Masterwork in every sense of the world. Gene Wolfe is an artist and a master of the craft. Read his books people!

    The Scar

The paperback is released on the 1st of July and the hardback the 17th of September (according to amazon)

    The Scar

His next book is called Iron Council and should be out sometime this summer. Like the Scar to Perdido Street Station, it will be a sequel set in the same world, but not a direct sequel.

    The Scar

I didn't think there was an anti-climax to the Scar, I found the ending excellent. Bellis Coldwine = me. That was something that always struck me as I read, how similar our characters are.

Lian Hearn: Tales of the Otori

I read the first one and didn't really think it was anything special. Average in every way.

    Juliet Marillier: The Sevenwaters Trilogy

One of my favourite trilogies ever, they're so emotitive and beautifully written. Always love the main character.

    The Machines are coming!

The most obvious one that springs to mind is the War of the Worlds by HG Wells.

    Lord Foul's Bane

The Covenant books are enjoyable enough, but nothing particuarly special, in my opinion. And far too traditional for my taste

    Howdy

He's a canuck, there is some sort of twisted logic to it...

    Chasam City

Haven't read it but I was planning on picking it at some time because I enjoyed Revelation Space and Redemption Ark so much. Pity you were disappointed.

    Good book needed

Darker Than You Think - Jack Williamson Fevre Dream - George RR Martin Elric - Micheal Moorcock These are books that I think are similar to the ones you mentions, but do you have anything more specific that you enjoyed about them. Are you looking for thing with a horror aspect or the same...

A Clash of Kings (spoilers inside)

You don't need to read the next book surely... I thought it was quite clear, it showed the two boys alive at the end and there's a chapter from Theon's point of view that describes what really happened. Where do problems arise?
