Juliet Marillier: The Sevenwaters Trilogy

I read the first one. It was a bit twee. They're just romance rewrites of old fairy tales. 'Oh, I am kidnapped by this terrible man, and yet I am strangely drawn to him.' Not my sort of thing. If you want to read a rewritten fairy tale, try reading Beauty by Sherri S Tepper. Much deeper, much darker.

Some other good rewrites are Gregory Maguire's books like Wicked, Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, and Lost.

One of my favourite trilogies ever, they're so emotitive and beautifully written. Always love the main character.

I keep seeing those on the shelves but I still haven't gotten around to buying them. I will eventually. They've got excellent covers and I firmly believe you should always judge a book by its cover. Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister I saw on tv, which I know isn't the same thing at all, but it was thoroughly entertaining.

I've read Lost & to be honest, wasn't very impressed with it. Are his others better?

Yeah, they are definetely better. The first one of his I read was Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, and I loved it. They have recently made a Broadway Musical out of Wicked (which I would recommend to read first), which has been a huge hit. He has another one called Mirror, Mirror, which I kind of read, but got distracted, and out of the books of his that I've read, Lost was probably the weakest (although it was somewhat interesting).

Thanks for posting the suggestion to check out this series, Liv. I'd not heard of it, but I checked it out on Amazon and I'm thinking I'm gonna have to pick it up sometime (thus adding to my ever-growing TBR pile).

The Sevenwaters trilogy is quite good. My favorite is the first book, Daughter of the Forest. I read it because I love fairytale retellings, and this one does a version of the brothers turning into swans.

Reviving an ald thread here but I just finished THE DARK MIRROR by Juliet Marillier. Book one of the Bridei Chronicles and I really liked it even though I read more historical fiction.
