I had the same problem, I ended up buying the audio book and subject my kiddo and hubby to listening to it quite often while driving around. I think it was the first audio book I actually bought, I usually just borrow them from the library.
I love Bill Bryson! I have found some similar writers, none I like quite as much but you might try A.J. Jacobs or Sam Kean if you like Bryson.

My son loved the Judy Blume & Roald Dahl books at that age, they were funny and adventurous. He also really liked the Magic Tree House series and I still see a lot of the kids checking those out at the library. And we both loved The Tale of Despereaux.

Yes, I even had a few back in the States, my favorite was a huge toad named Juliette. We did animal foster care and many people get them as pets not realizing how much care and food they require but we loved having them.
My legs don't really get cold at all with the thicker tights and I usually wear knee high socks & boots too, as someone else mentioned as long as my feet stay warm it works. And my hubby is usually willing to offer a warm place to sit if I really need it ;)
