Carrie (with Sissy Spacek) is definitely my favorite. Spacek was so amazing in the movie - she made the film, really. The reason I like it over Shawshank Redemption (my second favorite) is just the story itself. Meek and abused teen wreaks havoc on her tormentors, plus I'm fascinated by...
i am going to assume you meant books that i've read in the last 5 years that have impressed me the most. since all my books are packed (and i can't refer to their titles) these are all i can think of (in no particular order):
pride & prejudice, jane austen
day of the triffids, john wyndham...
I would call my bookstore Pages
it would be nice to combine it with a tea house, so you can have good cup of tea (and maybe a pastry) while you're reading the book you bought
Weaveworld, by Clive Barker. It's an excellent fantasy novel because of the imagery. I've never read anything that sparked my imagination as much as this book.
i'm glad you're staying, martin. although i'm not on here very often, it's always good to come and see the bookforum community when i can - and you're part of that. it would suck for you to not be here anymore
as for not writing anymore:
Is it true that you have retired?
Not yet. I'm writing but I'm writing at a much slower pace than previously and I think that if I come up with something really, really good, I would be perfectly willing to publish it because that still feels like the final act of...
From Stephen King's website
from the FAQ page at stephenking.com:
Is it true that you're going blind?
No, I'm not. I have a predisposition--and it's a genetic thing--to macular degeneration and that's a disease you can read about on the internet. It eventually results in blind spots and a...
camel-coloured wedge sandals. one inch strap across toe, with thin ankle straps joined with a small buckle at the ankle. cute, comfortable and didn't cost an arm and a leg
my love for shoes is rivalled only by that for my husband
Your day sounds the same as mine, Ashlea. I surf a lot, email constantly. I never liked talking on the phone and always prefer email. I do my banking and regularly make purchases online. That said, I could live without it. I would do almost anything to throw all this crap away, move to a remote...
i love hardcover books too. i love the strength in the covers, i especially love a battered hardcover. i like the freshness of a virgin book, just because it's new and i like new, clean things. but used books do have a mysterious quality that i love. who read it? did they enjoy it? why did they...
although i'm sure you weren't offended by my post, to clarify - i am a mutt and proud of it. the more diverse cultural ancestry in my line, the more interesting my family's genealogical history
you're just jealous 'cause you're not one of us
i speak english fluently but spent 4 years learning german in highschool. my german is pretty dusty because i never use it (definitely not fluent.) i intend to learn spanish and japanese (in that order) simply because i want to. i am somewhat embarrassed that i can only speak one language...
I agree about Tolkien, but since I did enjoy his stories I can't say he is my least favorite. Catherine Cookson is my least favorite. I read one of her books. I found the story boring and the writing style was (what is the word I am looking for?) immature. Maybe that does not describe it. It...
I can't pick one BEST BOOK EVER, so I will pick the best book I've read lately. That would be "Blindness" by Joe Saramago. It's bloody brilliant. Absorbing, terrible, cruel, beautiful. I can't wait to read it again
When I was 17 I had my first real nightmare. I was walking first on Expo '86-like wire-grid benches then I found myself climbing spiral stairs of the same wire-grid style. The stairs were paint splattered in colors, with a white base. I began to climb quickly, I was trying to reach my bedroom at...
