    Alexandre Dumas

Well, I have to agree, after THe Three Musketeers, the sequels do get less interesting. Try La Reine Margot, I think you'll like that.

    Alexandre Dumas

Why, thank you. I'm flattered. I do try.
  3. HermioneWeasley

    Alexandre Dumas

staggering under the load of homework for eight academic classes. Lucifer: I'm glad you're liking Dumas. When you're finished with those two novels, perhaps you'd like to discuss them with me in detail? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Also, if I may inquire, which translation are you reading?

    Neal Stephenson: Quicksilver

I'm quite surprised there isn't a thread about this yet. I"m about halfway through this book and really intrigued - can't wait to finish it and start the other two! I admit, for the first 200 pages or so, it was slow going, with some interesting moments but a lot I had to drudge through. But...

Autographed Books for Anyone who's interested..

Some are personalized, some aren't. The ones that are simply autographed: Pirates!, Kushiel's Scion, Party Princess... I've also already sold the Shannara set.

    Disturbing trend.

I totally agree...most fantasy seems to be generic repeats of the sword and sorcery genre. It's so hard to find something original! with that said, fantasy recommendations would be appreciated.

Autographed Books for Anyone who's interested..

I realize that I started a similar thread some time ago, but then I discovered quite a stash of books I'd forgotten to mention, so here's a nice clean thread of the entire list of signed books that I"m willing to sell. They're all in perfect condition, and I'll sell them for the list price of...

I want to fall in love with a fictional character

oh, most definately. I'm not sure if it's unfortunate or not.

    "genius" books

Having recently finished the latest Artemis Fowl, I am looking for similar books, basically ones with a genius as the main character. Not necessary evil or criminal, but books such as Artemis Fowl, or Catherine Jinks' "Evil Genius." I've heard that Ender's Game is a similar book, so I will...

I want to fall in love with a fictional character

I definately recommend pride and prejudice - you will love Elizabeth Bennet, and you will totally fall in love with Mr. Darcy...but love affairs with male fictional characters are horrible things....they're distracting and time consuming.

Where are you? (in the book you are reading) - please read 1st post

I am in Stalinist Moscow talking to Satan disguised as a foreigner. The Master and Margarita - Bulgakov. In reality, I'm in Minsk, Belarus...and a bit speachless.

    Dinner with a Character

Gosh, this is difficult..of course Mr. Darcy is a bit tempting. But I'd love to meet one of the characters from the works of my favorite author, Dumas. I think I would choose Bussy, simply because in the book he's so perfect, and I would like to see how that's possible. And of course, Scarlett...

    Recommend a very good (semi-)obscure fantasy/sf book

Stephen Brust's The Phoenix Guards - it's a sort of fantasy rewrite of the 3 musketeers, so you sort of have to have read that...but he's also written other books set in the same fantasy world, which I have not tried, but which I hear are good.

Thoughts on translations or the ramblings of a madman

Well, obviously I only read the original if I know the language very well, and I think that at some point I will pick up some great lit in languages I don't know. However, being so young, i want to give myself a chance to learn those languages first before trying translations. Interestingly...

    best book title ever!

Sorry to correct your French, but it's "les vrais durs ne dancent pas." Trust me and my French obsession to notice. As for my personal favorite title....I think I need to think about it a bit first.

Thoughts on translations or the ramblings of a madman

Sorry to quote such a huge post - don't have the time to edit right now. I'm actually reading this book right now, so it jumped out at me that you mentioned it. In the original Russian for me, of course, although the VN translation doesn't sound half bad.

    Cornelia Funke: Inkdeath

I loved these books, but read them quite a while ago, so I dont' remember a single thing except that I enojyed them extremely and was saddened when they ended and I'd be glad to find another series just as good. And I could totally relate to all the bibliophilia and bibliomania in the books.

Please suggest some good children's/teen fantasy

I think I've already read the Otori series...and the Chrestomanci series. And no, I don't think feudal Japan is a game show.
