An example might be "Midnight Express" a book I read as a teen when the movie had just been released...mid 70's I believe...just recently got it for one of my kids but I'm rereading it first. At middle age I can identify with the author's father as well, I've had children screw up big...
Interesting reading through this minefield...but certainly some folks defended their points very well. Random thoughts...I'm not a Catholic but the new pope sounds like he's at least trying to head the church the right direction, people who are dead set against gay marriage need to contemplate...
I think the release date is October 6, but this sounds like a worthwhile read. A review I just picked up suggested it's "1984" for the next generation. Mae is a new employee at a Googlesque corporation The Circle. At first the utopian benefits are dazzling. However corporate code encourages...
I think a cover can certainly make a difference. A cover that grabs your attention for whatever reason makes it easier when you're skimming through bins. I found a book recently about a Chechnyan surgeon, fascinating read. The cover was just a black and white shot of him exhausted in the...
I'm imagining it's a zombie of some sort, but Shadforth...your avatar resembles Ian Dury...just sayin'...if you're under forty, that's a compliment...The Blockheads were awesome.
Just got "No Cure for Cancer"-Denis Leary and "Midnight Express" by Billy Hayes (will reread and give to my kid for...
I just recently discovered GoodReads. I don't need to make myself read or reach any goals, but it's a fun site. I just like flitting through rating books. The first time you go on it's like wow I've read that one and that one and that whole row and then there's one I never saw before...
I agree, I don't think I could feel totally comfortable with someone who dislikes companion animals. Even if it was a single mouse I want to have something as a pet.
Just kinda goofy...the expression "tomboy", of course I know what you mean but isn't it a bit goofy? I was always a bit of a nancygirl myself:p
But about labeling books, maybe it's helpful for some people as a guide, but if it's used to bar certain books from certain ages then it's covert banning.
Our local libraries have used book areas that allow you to drop off or carry away as many as you like. Excellent in that you can pick up anything that looks even slightly interesting then pass it on to friends or drop it off again.
I sort read books by the questions " Do I want to reread this...
Some of us share our homes with numerous creatures, for others human companions are enough. I was put off by Tina Fey sharing how she didn't like animals in BossyPants. I've always had critters, strictly a cat lover for many years...then my Sophie came into the family, an AmStaff afraid of her...
Feeling old...ya mean BESIDES the AARP mailings? Besides when you actually begin READING the AARP mailings?
When your spouse calls you to the television screen and says "Who is that?" and you don't recognize the gray geezer with the guitar
Sometimes it's worse when you do recognize the gray...
I found this forum after being disappointed about a previous group. It seemed like more a social network than people who were actually into reading books. It also had trolls who were more interested in posting count than having any idea what they were talking about. And yes, for those of us with...
Those pictures...I'd have a truck backed up and be tossing books in as I went along, looks like a reader's paradise! I love book sales and used book stores. So many out of print books and unusual titles plus great prices of course. Back to the original question...if there is a new book I...
I don't consider audio books "cheating" nor Spark Notes for that matter. You're still digesting information. Actually, listening to school texts while you drive is an excellent idea.
Obviously to answer this question I would have to bring several writers back from the dead...I would love to talk to historian Shelby Foote, I'm a history buff and he spent most of his life researching the civil war. I would have a bottle of good brandy available and would just listen to his...
Two quirks of other forums I belong to-the trolls are people who don't really have any interest in the topic or even theme of the forum in general. They just stagger around, popping up with the most randomly bat crap opinions. The other group are the dog snobs. Not to be confused with THEE Dog...
