Do you read in the toilet, and what reading material usually goes in there?

Absolutely. If I have a book I'm reading or a magazine when I need to run to the bathroom, I will take it in with me. We also keep several books from the Uncle John's Bathroom Reader series in the bathroom. There has been many-a-time my husband or I just have to share what we've read while...

    Robin McKinley

Absolutely LOVE her books. Spindle's End is probably my favorite, though The Hero and The Crown is up there, as well. I have yet to read Beauty, but plan to do so soon.

    The most powerful films

The Elephant Man. I don't remember another movie that affected me so much.

Saddest Cubicle - can anyone relate?

That sounds pitiful. I hope they got him moved somewhere better...I think it's the bathroom that does it. Fortunately, I've never had to work in a cubicle. The closest I came was sharing a window-less office at the United States Patent Office, back when I was an examiner. All my other jobs...

    John Grisham

I have The Testament - haven't read it. However, I think The Street Lawyer is almost as good as The Rainmaker. I enjoyed them both immensley.

    Best Science Fiction Films

I was unaware this was horror when a friend took me to see it...I just thought it was sci-fi. I HATE horror films and had my eyes closed and ears covered through most of the movie. Favorite sci-fi films...considering I don't watch many films, the list is short. Star Trek VI: Undiscovered...

    Teen Fiction

Robin McKinley's Hero and the Crown and The Blue Sword combine a bit of romance, fantasy, and action. They are a couple of my favorites, that you might enjoy. You might want to look into her other books, as well. You might also enjoy E.D. Baker's The Frog Princess books. I know my students...

    Laugh Out Loud Funny

I read it as an adult - and also qualify as nerdy (substitute Chemical Engineering news for your Design Engineer) - and LOVED it. My husband also did not read it until an adult, and found it funny, as well.

    October Reads

As best I can remember...these books are the ones I read in October: The Dragon of Never-was by Ann Downer and Omar Rayyan Dragon Slippers by Jessica Day George No One Noticed the Cat by Anne McCaffrey And then there were None by Agatha Cristie Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by...

The first sentence in the book you're reading

Good book. My husband is in advertising (specifically, he writes copy), so I thought the description of copy-writing at that time interesting, as was the mystery.

Footnotes: love them or hate them

I enjoyed the footnotes in JS&MN, as well. I usually enjoy them, as they create an interesting back story or contribute something of interest. I will admit that they can interrupt the flow of a story, but I only find this a problem when the story isn't interesting enough to keep me engaged.

Susanna Clarke: Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell

The beginning of the London part is a bit slow, but it definitely picks up from there. I finished JS&MN a week ago and LOVED it. I thought the writing style was wonderful and the humor throughout often made me laugh. I agree with the comment above that it has a Dickenson feeling; I've also...

    Funny books

Terry Pratchett's books...especially the Night Watch related books. We seem to have a similar taste in comics - I suggest checking out Non Sequitur - I never fail to laugh at these.

    Michael Crichton

I enjoyed The Great Train Robbery, which was well researched and an interesting and fun read. Can't speak for his newer stuff, which seems to be very focused on his own agenda - have thus far refrained from reading it.

    Do you read much non-fiction?

I go through phases. When I do read non-fiction, I read science non-fiction....I've tried other topics, but they can't hold my interest in a book. I especially tend to enjoy natural history books and history of science books.

do you keep track of the books you read?

I don't keep a list, because I can remember what I've read. However, I've often thought about keeping one, just to see what I've read in a particular year. Then again, maybe I shouldn't do this - if my husband knew how many books I went through a year, he'd probably not be so cool about my...

Do you like to read with background noise, or need complete silence?

She's a mom - mom's have superpowers when it comes to blocking out crap and getting things done, even when reading.
