Are you an ardent Rowling fan?

Hee - I did the same. The first one I picked up because of the hype of the forth book, and read them all so bought the 4th on day of release, and then the 5th. I even got the two comic relief books. I am a fan of the stories, not really of Rowling. If she is to bring out another story...

Review: Defence for Harry Potter against escapism

How many of you have heard of a lovely author called George Meredith? In his time, he was even more popular than the wonderful Charles Dickens...now who gets all the press? I think those deemed popular at the time are not certain to become classics. The likes of Roald Dahl are only going...

Are you an ardent Rowling fan?

I have read all of them, buy them on day of release and then rebuy in the collectors editions. I am not a huge fan, they are enjoyable enough to read and buy the films, and I urge others to read them. My whole basis for doing so is that I want to read them to be able to give my opinion on...

Review: Defence for Harry Potter against escapism

I'll come back with your constructive critique once I've done the housework and such, but for now, as I am one of those people who believe HP to be nothing but escapist fiction, I counter: Throughout recent years, Harry Potter has become a household name, not just in the United Kingdom, but...

    Another Newbie

Hi there Nelle, welcome to thebookforum. I used to talk to my fish about books but they got a little startled during a particularly harrowing scene in Moby Dick, and now they refuse to discuss the matter any more. The Internet's the next best place though :) Mxx

    Sebastian Faulks

I have it on my shelf along with another 10 or so of the big read books, just waiting to be read. Sorry. My postings in this thread just now are pointless. When watching The Big Read I kind of turned off during this one, not only because of who represented it, but because I didn't want...

    Does this even exist?

ah, sorry - thought that thread covered the sequel too - that I am not so hopeful with. It would be fantastic to see it come out, as the first book is fantastic. However, I feel it may just be a little con, same as some of the aspects surrounding the first novel. Do you have the version where...

Book of the Month Jan-Jun 2004

not sure if SBoy has been decided yet. War & Peace seems to take place between 1805 and 1820 during Napoleon's invasion of Russia - and Tolstoy was born in 1928 (I think), but I really don't know much about it. Check out the book online if you like :)...

Book of the Month Jan-Jun 2004

actually, we may very well be reading A Suitable Boy in July - following on from War and Peace in May/June. What better than being able to say you have read the longest book written in the English language - oh - and War & Peace too. hee. Heck, why don't we go the whole way and read The Stand...

    BBC's The Big Read - Top 100

There are books in the 100>200 section that I would have wanted to appear in the actual Top 100...but then this is where we all get into the debate of what we like and don't like and what should have been higher up the list. So far I have read 37 of the top 100 (the next few months of the...

    "Passion" by Mel Gibson

I didn't enjoy it, but I thought it was an excellent film what with the way it was done. The Mother and Mary Magdelene (the former prostitute who Jesus stopped from being stoned in one scene), was a very touching scene. Oh, and the devil 'dude' was played by a woman :D Glad you went to...

    Recently Purchased/Borrowed

I can, sometimes, walk out of the bookstore without buying anything - but then I usually make up for this by spending anywhere between £50 & £100 the next time I go in. I like books Mxx
