I read The Woman In Black by Susan Hill on Saturday. Literally read it straight through in one sitting. I highly recommend it, especially one week before Halloween. Beautifully atmospheric and dark and broody. The haunted, desolate house theme developed perfectly for your spine chilling...

    The official 2012 apocalypse thread

And here I planned on going on a Costco run tomorrow and stocking up on toilet paper and Tequila. The toilet paper now seems irrelevent.

    Are picture books gender specific?

I know this topic is specifically about picture books but I wonder how these same people would react if you asked them if they only read books with the main character being the same gender as them. Kind of like, "What book are you yourself reading right now, Ms. Jones?" "I am a big Agatha...

    Halloween Reads?

October is most definitely dedicated to chillers. I started with Adam Nevill's Banquet Of The Damned. I'm now in John Harwoods The Seance. Next is Susan Hill's A Woman In Black. Then comes The Chronological Man by Andrew Mayne. I may still be working my way through the list at Thanksgiving...

Banquet for the Damned by Adam L. G. Nevill. Really looking forward to starting this book. I wish I had one of those sound machine's with a "stormy night" setting or a "by the pricking of my thumbs" setting. =o)

Children's Books you still love to read today.

Child abuse! Just kidding. I'm a big Beverly Cleary fan too. I read all her books to my daughter when she was little and we even wrote her a fan letter. She responded with a nice note to us in return which we had framed.

    Recently Finished

I've just finished The Passage by Justin Cronin. I enjoyed it tremendously. One of the best apocalyptic/horror books I've read. :stars4: It's a long book but worth the time investment.

Brick & mortar bookstores- R.I.P. & good riddance

As of this morning we are down to two book stores here on Oahu, only one of which carries novels. The other is a co-op that caters to protest group type of literature. So basically there is only one book store left for my interests. Since they are the only game in town I'm guessing Oahu...

Children's Books you still love to read today.

I have to cast my vote for Charlotte's Web. I think I've reread that one about 10 times or so. I recently bought a beautiful hardcover version that I had no earthy need for (my youngest is 18 so I can't pretend it's for him.) There is something about that beautiful blue cover with Charlotte...

New Neal Stephenson Sept 20: "Reamde: A Novel"

Hey, it could be worse. It's not like you're on crack or a compulsive gambler or something like that. Those people can go through some serious money. Or you could be spending horrendous amounts buying organic meat and produce from Whole Foods or something completely insane like that. A few...

    Sunshine inspiration

One of my life's great ironies is that I live in a place of almost neverending sunshine. I miss seasons, fall the most. I get positively giddy over the news of cooler temperatures (mid 60's) and stormy weather. I put on long pants and brew up a pot of hot spiced wine. And if I close the...

Is this the end for books?

Very true. MIL won't even use a check card or an ATM machine. If you told her she was going to have use an e-reader she'd have a heart attack.

Bad Ideas: Booktrack Adds Sound Effects And Music to Books

Okay, so I'll risk looking like the big idiot here and ask the idiot question. How does the book know where your eyes are to know when to start the footsteps or clock ticking noise? What if you are a fast reader and are already on the part where someone is being beaten to death and the reader...

    East Coast Shenanigans

I've only experienced very minor quakes here except for one about three years ago. It was kind of like all the doors of the house got slammed all at once. Over before you could really react. My spice rack fell off the wall and that was it. But then, due to some safeguard built into the...

That is so cool that you spoke with Adam Barker. I liked his characters and the setting was so unusual. I especially like when he told the story from the Rye/zombie point of view. Nobody ever tells the zombies side! RE: The Passage. I'm only a little ways in but I like it so far. One...

    East Coast Shenanigans

Boy, you folks along the east coast are having an exciting week. Both earthquakes and storm warnings. I hope everyone is well. :flowers:

How often does your SO let you out of your cage?

Mr. mmyap and I have been married for 28 years this month. Both of us have things we like to do that doesn't involve the other and that's just fine with both of us. We've never done the "must be attached at the hip" thing. Of course, neither of us is out clubbing and doing that sort of thing...

Where are you? (in the book you are reading) - please read 1st post

I'm at a secret research facility in Colorado turning death row convicts into, well, something besides human. And I'm hearing voices.
