Well of course, you can't ignore the classic Depression novel, John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath (though I personally didn't find it too interesting).
Either that or he'll hate the book and curse my avatar kitty. I never said the books were great, I'm just saying they'll help him with his project.:p Though The Bean Trees is pretty awesome.

Seventh Son is a little more advanced but not tough to get through because it's just a great story.
Keep applying, especially if you know that this is really what you want to do. I am still in library school (getting a Master's) so at this point I can't really give you any practical advice. But I totally think that libraries are the places to be :D
