I thought I'd revive this topic since it's still very pertinent, and it's been in the news lately:

Looks like Dick Cheney wants to make torture ok, at least sometimes.
I second Stewart's recommendation ( shocking, I know) for Disgrace. It has beautiful writing, a bit more of a literary style, and a more postmodern flavor to it (The Power of One is more popular-fiction-y). It also addresses racial issues in South Africa as well as issues of personal...
Allison,
Welcome to the forums :) I have read quite a few books containing social commentary that I enjoyed. The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay is an amazing book about South Africa during apartheid. The story is about a young white boy, named Peekay, who learns about the ugliness of...
i saw this advertised and then I read the book (Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenrich - great book!) and then I didn't know what to do... the ad didn't say if/when some discussion would take place. oh well, at least I got something out of it.
How about So You Want to Be A Wizard by Diane Duane? That's about a girl who learns magic but must quickly become good at it in order to help repair an imbalance between good and evil in the universe. She has a friend named Kit who helps her. They travel through a kind of "rip" in the air...
I've only read the uncut version but I skimmed parts of the original and I'd say you're probably better off with uncut. I really like Stephen King and I think he added a lot of really great character development and refinement to the uncut version. Since the characters in his stories hold the...
Hey Hermione,
I have some suggestions for you! If you like historical fiction, mythology, and mysteries Wilbur Smith's River God and its sequels fit the bill - those books have it all! The books are set in ancient Egypt and they weave together historical information with Egyptian mythology...
This sounds like a great idea. It's funny, but librarians are actually very well equipped to host/run book parties. In a few of my library science classes I've either talked about or had to present a book talk, which is basically a short summary of the book, highlighting its appeal factors...
I haven't read it but through my work I've read a lot of reviews of it. It was an extremely influential work and the author is very well-respected so I think that if you're interested in the subject it's basically a core text.
Movin' to the country, gonna eat me a lot of peaches...
Peaches come in a can
They were put there by a man
In a factory downtown
If I had my little way
I'd eat peaches every day... :D
Ever seen the video for that? Ninjas jump out and attack the band.
Ohh, yes. It was quite good. There's a little place on my campus run by this one guy, who makes very good chili cheese dogs (the trick is to somehow figure out when the place is open!)
WoundedThorns:
I'm not such a huge fan of chick lit, IMHO it tends to take itself a bit too seriously and often I just want to smack the main character for being kind of a bitch. Janet Evanovich's books have a couple chick-lit elements in them, in that they feature a strong, single female...
I love, love, love food. Just wanted to get that out there. :D
And, Monkey Catcher, if you ever get a chance try a Chili Cheese Dog! Hotdog American style with chili and nacho cheese on it... mmmm. heart attack on a bun.
Yeah, once my fiance was looking for a job and since there was an opening in my work he applied and got it... I ended up training him. It went really well, but I know what you mean, Catalyst.
Yeah I didn't see that coming either. Do you guys think the guy working the ball machine should have been fired? I think the poor schmuck was just trying to do what the PM said as well as he could, I don't think he's a bad candidate. It's a bummer for him. Too bad I can't remember his name...
