On the Psychology of "Gifted" Children

Ah! I should have asked the age to begin with! Eight is a particularly rough age to be really smart. Since she doesn't like to write (and neither did I, because I had -- and have -- atrocious handwriting), here are a few other things that helped me: Mentoring -- see if the teacher of the...

    Penguins.

Oh, yes . . . PLEASE keep spreading the warning. But nobody else will believe you, and we'll have achieved our goal of stealing your sanity and that of everyone else around you! BWAHAHAHA! Cathy Being fat and untasty is all part of our plan!

    Political Statement--US eyes only

Haha. Probably because I don't see many movies, don't follow movie star's careers, and couldn't pick either of them out on the street. :D It took about five movies before I could remember Harrison Ford's name! Cathy

Who is your least favourite author?

Yeah, I have to agree that Tolkien is on the top of my list. And Faulker and Steinbeck are up there, too. I probably haven't picked up any number of books that I am certain I would hate because they're lovingly compared to these books that I already hate. So there could be many more despised...

    BONJOUR>>>

Nah, I thought it was nice escapist entertainment. I didn't think of it as anything but fiction, so I didn't get tied up in the "sheer majesty of it all" that some did (including the critics.) Normally, I don't pick up a single book that the critics like, because I'll probably hate it -- for...

    BONJOUR>>>

That is NOT a fake photo, BTW, folks! That big kittycat is still alive and now residing at Sea World in Houston, TX! It was a world record 138 pounds! There was an article about it in last month's Texas Monthly magazine. I liked the Da Vinci Code quite a bit, oldboy. He's got several more...

    feeling aimless

Gizmo, My best advice is to try a little of everything. If you like biology, try a bit of paleobiology, or maybe some CSI forensic stuff. The thing is -- you won't find the thing that you love, doing only what you know. Sure, it might not work for you, but I can assure you that all of...

On the Psychology of "Gifted" Children

You might contact Mensa's website, Irene. I'll just bet that they've got a great list for "gifted" kids. I was one myself, even though they didn't call us that back in the 60s and 70s. I was fortunate that my mother refused to allow me to be accelerated in school. I would have graduated at...

    coffee

My favorite? Cafe au lait and beniets! Made with only the finest French Market brand. It's a dark roast mixed with chicory -- VERY smooth and rich. Served in all the finest cafes in New Orleans. Either that or Community Coffee, which has enough ambient caffeine that even walking by the...

    BONJOUR>>>

Welcome, oldboy! Yum, canjunmama! That catfish sounds good (and so does the gumbo!) I'm a red beans & rice kind of girl (or dirty rice), rather than white beans, but LOVE field peas and snaps on the side! They just recently hauled out a big ole 50 pounder kittycat from our local lake, but...

    Isaac Asimov's Foundation Series

Don't forget, too, that Asimov wrote a wonderful pair of short mystery series, the "Tales of the Black Widowers" and "Union Club Mysteries". They're collections of stories that appeared in Ellery Queen magazine. They are AMAZING for their ability to take mundane events and turn them on their...

how much do you write per day?

How much do I write each day? I think it depends on the day. Some days not at all, and some 30-50 pages. A lot depends on WHAT I'm writing -- whether a non-fiction article for a magazine or newspaper (which takes a lot longer, because you're trying to cram all of your ideas into a set number...

What 's your favourite book character?

Really?! That was my absolutely favorite adaptation of that role. I thought he did a superb job as the melancholy-bordering-on-insane prince. Ah, well. To each his own view! :p Hmm. My favorite characters: Nero Wolfe (from the Rex Stout mystery series) Harry Dresden...

Well, I've started Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell and am about up to page 230. Someone PLEASE tell me that it gets better. It's dragging like a wooden leg so far! :( Cathy

    I, Robot

   Gizmo! You MUST STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND GO BUY THIS BOOK!! Immediately! Without Delay! It is a classic and you will love it! Much better than the move, from what I'm told (haven't seen it yet -- waiting for the rentals to slow down). Yeah, I like Will Smith...

    Library Books

Wow! People must be a lot easier on library books around here. Never had any of those things happen to a library book! We have books 20-50 years old with nary a stain, and they get used a lot! I guess I should be thankful!! Cathy Penguins always treat others' books with respect!

    Howdy:)

Welcome, Caline! You should get plenty of great reading ideas from this forum (and have plenty of time to read in Alaska nights! What are they, 14 hours long?) Have you tried any of the Buffy novelizations? They're not just rehashes of the series, but completely new stories about the gang...

    Oops i'm new... kinda

Welcome! What books do you read while you're knitting plastic sacks (which sounds really interesting all by itself!)?? Cathy The penguins welcome new words!

I need new books to read - help!!!

Try the new Kevin J. Anderson series (not so much fantasy as science fiction, but VERY good). It's the "Saga of Seven Suns" series. The first is Hidden Empire, the second A Forest of Stars, and the latest one is Horizon Storms. There will be seven total. The critics are comparing it to Dune...

    Teenage geek frustration!

HA! You think that's bad, somewhat and Gizmo -- just wait until you're trying to read and also WRITE! My best suggestion? Learn to speed read. (Honest, not kidding.) If only I didn't have to sleep or eat. Sigh... Cathy Penguins are lucky, they ONLY have to sleep and eat.
