"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope .... " By the time winter rolled around...
I am reminded of the time the car company, Chevrolet, named one of their new vehicles Nova and then wondered why it didn't sell in Mexico .... totally oblivious to the fact that Nova translates loosely to "It doesn't go" in Spanish.
I absolutely loved Kevin Branagh's Henry V (the movie). "AND GENTLEMEN OF ENGLAND NOW A'BED SHALL THINK THEMSELVES ACCURSED THEY WERE NOT HERE, AND HOLD THEIR MANHOOD'S CHEAP, WHILST ANY SPEAKS THAT FOUGHT WITH US UPON ST. CRISPIN'S DAY!" ..... Shakespeare is not quoted perfectly in the movie's...

OK, I'm going to play devil's advocate here and say that I DID very much like the last book (except for the 'Epilogue' which I thought was terrible). I'm going to just make a guess that by the time the third book had come out Collins was aware that she was writing not...
@Millicent --- OH NO !!!! .... I must admit once again to owning a book I have not read yet *LOL* Yes, I do own it and considering how much I liked Rise and Fall I can't believe I haven't gotten to it yet. I do know that Shirer was a news correspondent in Berlin at the time Hitler was rising to...
And right you were to move it. I wasn't aware of this thread. Anyway here is a taste of The Life And Times Of Judge Roy Bean if anyone is interested ...
As long as we are discussing western books and movies, have either of you seen the movie, The Life And Times Of Judge Roy Bean? It is a serious/comic western about the real life figure Roy Bean who was known as "The Law West of the Pecos". It is an outstanding movie with an excellent combination...
Meadow, your sources are indeed correct. It was a mini-series now that I recall. The last time I saw it was on VCR which had compressed the series into a full length movie ... thus I called it a "movie" when in fact it was originally a mini-series made for TV. Thanks for the correction.
Edited...
I have all 7 volumes sitting on a bookshelf right next to me but I have not read them yet. I'd say that about 2/3 of my library (3,000 books) contains titles I have not read. The example of Rise and Fall Of The Third Reich illustrates my strategy: It was a dark and stormy night .... no, really...
You have excellent taste! I too would like to read Lonesome Dove. I had the opportunity to buy it at a book fair some time ago for pennies but didn't, and I've been kicking myself ever since. I did see the movie and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm sure the book will be a fantastic read for you...
I think what many perceive as the excessive reparation components of The Treaty Of Versailles opens a complicated issue. The animosity between France and Germany long predates the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand. Most recent to this conflict (WWI) was the calculated contrivance of the...
I read it some time ago. After a recent discussion with sparkchaser about the book The Guns Of August I began recounting some of the books about war I have read and this one came to mind the other day on my drive to work, though this is less a book about war than a biography of Adolph Hitler. I...
