    Sara Gruen: Water For Elephants

Parallels with the Biblical Jacob I don't have a lot of parallels, but here are a couple: Bib. Jacob fiercely loved Rachel; JJ fiercely loved Marlena Bib. Jacob was good with animals; JJ is good with animals. Camel is a name that would be significant to desert-dwelling Bib. Jacob. I...

A Thousand Splendid Suns-depressing till end?

Thanks n_maw. I don't require a happy ending. What I was finding depressing was the way Miriam had no control, whatsoever, over her life.

    Jasper Fforde: How to Describe

Thanks Tempest; I'm really enjoying the books. I think I might throw out the "succinct" idea and just give a rambling description. ~LIB

    Jasper Fforde: How to Describe

I've been reading Jasper Fforde: The Eyre Affair, Lost in a Good Book and The Well of Lost Plots. I'm enjoying these books very much and would like to nominate one for my Book Group to read. In my Book Group, when one nominates a book, one succinctly summarizes the book. Herein lies my...

A Thousand Splendid Suns-depressing till end?

Please don't give me any spoilers, but I have a question aboutA Thousand Splendid Suns. This is the follow-up to The Kite Runner, which I liked very much. A Thousand Splendid Suns starts out very depressing. The Kite Runner had it's depressing moments, but it was redemptive--so I didn't...

    Hello All! From Oregon

Dear Spark chaser: Thanks for the welcome. Yes, we know how to do microbrew here. Do you know Mcmenimans? I love the Ruby Ale there. There are also many good breweries that do different versions of pale ale. One favorite is Deshuttes Brewery's Mirrorpond. ~LIB

    Hello All! From Oregon

Dear Forest Elf: Thanks for the greeting. I've never been to Roseburg, but I bet we have places along the coast in common. When you went to the beach, what town did you go to? Was it Yachats, by any chance? ~LIB

    Hello All! From Oregon

Oregonian IS the correct term. And we pronounce the name of the state "OR-E-GUN" We hate "OR-E-GAWN" I'm must admit, I haven't read "Notion". I think it is liked by Oregonians, based on the fact that my Book Group read it a year or two before I joined.

    Hello All! From Oregon

Thank you for the welcome Jasan. Yes, I know many places need rain. I'm not complaining about the rain--being a native Oregonian, I kinda like it. (I'm weird, I know.)

    Hello All! From Oregon

Thanks for the welcome, Nomadic Myth. I understand the Nomad part of your name--Nova Scotia, Korea--but why Myth?

    Hello All! From Oregon

Hello All! I'm a (gulp) middle-aged woman from Portland, Oregon. I've heard it theorized that the reason there are so many book stores and so many readers in the Pacific Northwest, is because it's rainy here. I think that is a pretty good theory. I know one of my favorite things is...
