Hello All! From Oregon

Hello All!

I'm a (gulp) middle-aged woman from Portland, Oregon.

I've heard it theorized that the reason there are so many book stores and so many readers in the Pacific Northwest, is because it's rainy here. I think that is a pretty good theory. I know one of my favorite things is curling up in my reading chair, with a good book, listening to the rain outside.

I've been an avid reader most of my life. I read lots of things, but my favorite genre is mystery.

I used to be a Middle School Librarian. I belong to a Book Group, so I talk face-to-face with people about books. But, I'd like to talk about books with you all.

Hi LIB & welcome,
I used to live right across the bridge in Vancouver WA. I miss Powell's, Coffee People and so many other things :)
Take care,

Oh yeah! Nova Scotia, my home province, is pretty rainy at times, though not as much as the Pacific NW. Love snow storms and a good book, too. Rainy season in Korea is fun as well. Any excuse to stay inside to read.

BTW, welcome, and enjoy your time here.

Thanks for the welcome, Ronny. Yes, Powells is pretty cool. Coffee People was bought out recently by Starbucks. Progress?

Thanks for the welcome, Nomadic Myth. I understand the Nomad part of your name--Nova Scotia, Korea--but why Myth?

An anagram of my 16-letter-total full real-name is "a nomadic myth told". So, I am the living of a story of a nomad's life, or something like that. A friend of mine unscrambled the anagram and gave it to me as a gift. I think it's cool. I love her.

Could you send some of the rain down here please, we're in a nasty drought/low water storage down under at the moment. :p

Hi and welcome LIB, btw. Hope you enjoy your stay.

Thank you for the welcome Jasan. Yes, I know many places need rain. I'm not complaining about the rain--being a native Oregonian, I kinda like it. (I'm weird, I know.)

I traveled through Oregon over 20 years ago, on a bicycle. I loved the place. Certainly taught me a lot about rain.

I always wanted to ask an Oregonian (is "Oregonian" the correct term?), especially one who clearly has an appreciation of rain, about Ken Kesey's Sometimes a Great Notion: is it a book Oregonians like?

Oregonian IS the correct term.

And we pronounce the name of the state "OR-E-GUN" We hate "OR-E-GAWN"

I'm must admit, I haven't read "Notion". I think it is liked by Oregonians, based on the fact that my Book Group read it a year or two before I joined.

At the time, I thought Notion was a wonderful book. I have never re-read it, though, so I'd have to reserve judgement.

Nice movie, incidentially, by & with Paul Newman.

What I remember most from both the book and my trip, were the forests of Oregon - green and wet and absolutely wonderful.

Ooooh, Oregon is my home state ... I was born in Roseburg. I agree, there is nothing like curling up with a book on a cool rainy afternoon!!!

Dear Forest Elf:

Thanks for the greeting.

I've never been to Roseburg, but I bet we have places along the coast in common. When you went to the beach, what town did you go to? Was it Yachats, by any chance?

Welcome!

Portland is one of my favorite cities in the U.S. So much microbrew beer....

LIB, I've been all through Oregon ... from Portland down to Ashland and all along the Columbia River Gorge and down through the Willamette National Forest and down to Klamath Falls and over to Bend. I never get tired of exploring the state. Usually when I go to the coast I head for Florence.

Right now I'm sitting near Joplin MO surrounded by ICE!!!

South Texas sounds really good right now!

Dear Spark chaser:

Thanks for the welcome. Yes, we know how to do microbrew here. Do you know Mcmenimans? I love the Ruby Ale there. There are also many good breweries that do different versions of pale ale. One favorite is Deshuttes Brewery's Mirrorpond.

Mcmenimans is the only place I will stay at when I go to Portland. The Hammerhead package is the absolute best value ANYWHERE.
