Well, I'm French, and live in Switzerland. And I can tell you that Harry Potter is a megastar! Many of my friends are eargerly waiting for the book's French version, and some have bought the original version though they're not fluent. I'd say there isn't as much hype as there seems to be in...
I've read 31, some of which I remember very vaguely from school or childhood. It's good to have that list although to my French mind it appears very British-centered (no offence!) and some f the books are not so good.
As for myself, I had only read "The Hobbit" as a child and it was only when I saw "LOTR: the Fellowship" that I got the trilogy and started it. Of course I've been deeply influenced by the movie but still would not have read the books (haven't read the third though... waiting for the movie...)...
Hi! I love reading about Paris as seen by foreigners! I subscribed a couple of days ago. I'm currently based in Switzerland by consider myself to be from Paris as I've lived there from 10 to 23, near La Tour d'Argent ;-) (where, needless to say, I've never been!) and still have my family there...
Here are my recent buys:
It's a long way from Penny Apples by Bill Cullen
(Another Irish memoir I guess, and I love them. Although this one could be not so sour)
Star of the Sea by Joseph O'Connor
Amsterdam by Ian McEwan
Les Cavaliers (The Riders?) by Joseph Kessel
La Traviatta by...
Hi!
I haven't met any authors, at least I don't remember... but I've written to and gotten answers from Belgium author Amélie Nothomb, French author Robert Sabatier (I don't think he's wellknown here...) and Raymond Briggs ;-)
Girl with a pearl earring! I had no idea! I loved this book.
There's also "Ned Kelly", the adaptation of The True Story of the Kelly Gang, starring Heath Ledger, Orlando Bloom...
a book which I loved as a child, about a spoilt and wealthy little girl. She was offered a giant chocolate egg but was punished and transformed into a tiny person. I guess the book goes back to the first half of the 2oth century, it has beautiful illustrations but that is all I can remember...
Well, for myself I try to read as many texts in the original language as I can. But for instance I've read translations of Chinese, Russian etc... As for Houellebecq I've never read any of his books.
For the time being I live in Switzerland, but I come from Paris.
Thanks for your welcome!
Hi, I'm a new-comer, and French, so please excuse my mistakes...
I would say that Michael Winterbottom's adaptation of "Jude" by Thomas Hardy was very good, not better than the novel but brilliant still.
And I've just thought that "Bridget Jones' Diary" is much better than the novel.I found...
Hello
I saw the film by Stephen Daldry and read the book afterwards. I found the adaptation to be very faithfull to the book and was even more moved by the movie. However, I haven't read "Mrs Dalloway". I was forced to study Woolf in university and since then I've had problems reading her...
