Just stumbled onto a post over at Goodreads with an interesting inquiry. The poster is looking for the name of a novel her grandfather read in the '50s about a malady that spreads through a Pearl Harbor hospital a few days after the attack and causes coughing fits. Sound familiar to anyone?
There was a book that came out back around 1999-2000 that was called "Final Remains" or something similar, about a young guy that begins working for a funeral home in Florida. I remember the beginning talked about how the main character decided to work there because his parents were killed in a...
Less Than Zero by Brent Easton Ellis is about a college-age guy returning to California for Christmas. He's no Holden Caulfield, but he's the most put-together character, and it's a great look at '80s excess - bored kids with tons of money and no restraints.
I stumbled upon a novel a few months back about the first SST flight from the U.S. to the U.K. (which, of course, is beset by disaster) and wrote the title down, but misplaced it. I remember the cover had an illustration of the plane in the foreground and the flight crew in the background. Any...
Years ago I checked out a book from my hometown library's young adult section that contained a number of obscure true ghost stories. The one that always stuck with me concerned a priest that died and was buried outside of his town. On the way back from the funeral the mourners saw him walking...
Years ago when living in South Florida I stumbled upon a massive hardcover in a library's reference section that chronicled England's exploits across the globe. As I couldn't check it out I was only able to skip through it briefly, and although I wrote down the name I misplaced it after I moved...
A few months ago I read and older book called "Passengers" about a new airliner with a mysterious problem. It centers around a pilot trying to expose the issue - a really great novel. You should be able to pick up a used copy online fairly easily.
Thanks for the advice! Yes, using a basic and timeless style does seem to be a safe bet. And my main concern did center around language too modern for the era.
Does anybody know of a place online (or a book) that offers lists of words (mainly adjectives and verbs) popular and appropriate for various time periods? I want to start on a period piece and was wondering if such a resource existed.
About ten years ago I checked out a book from the library that was authored by two guys with the same last name. The book had been published in the UK and the cover was white with a silhouette of a cemetery on the bottom. While the writing was good I can only fully remember one story, a tale...
I was wondering if anyone has read any short stories about the archetypal strange house in the neighborhood that everyone makes tales up about. I got to thinking the other day that, despite reading numerous ghost and horror stories I had never come across one of these. Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks for the recommendation, jackoliver! Forgot to mention that the stories were not from various sources (as in an anthology) but written by the book's author.
For years I have been looking for a paperback book my friend had from the late '70s or early '80s. It had a two-word title, something like Ghostly Terrors or Horrors, and the cover featured a dark illustration of a horse-drawn carriage. Something about the way the stories were written cut to...
I'm looking for the title of a book I've run across several times in the past that deals with a group of vigilante cops. The photo on the front cover shows a police cap and the badge on the front has a skull on it.
