Do we learn something from the books we read or just filling up our free time?

He still believes in responsability ; denying free-will is not inconciliable with such a position. In fact, he has expressed his full support to capital punishment. I personally abide to the idea that we are rigorously determined, althought I wouldn't develop the reasons here, it being too...

Do we learn something from the books we read or just filling up our free time?

Not really, as my recommandations would be in french. This is briefly what he believes "Schopenhauer believed that humans were motivated only by their own basic desires" "For Schopenhauer, human desire was futile, illogical, directionless, and, by extension, so was all human action in the...

How many books do you own?

About 40 something books, a lot of them being literature classics. Hoping to expand that number ; I have started buying books instead of borrowing them for the sole purpose of watching it grow. If only they wouldn't be so expansive!

    Danielle Steel

Industrial writers with astronomic profit margins such as Danielle Steel or Nora Roberts are directly implyed in the moral degradation of literature - that is my opinion, at least.

    Favourite Poems

The Joyful Corpse (Baudelaire) In a rich, heavy soil, infested with snails, I wish to dig my own grave, wide and deep, Where I can at leisure stretch out my old bones And sleep in oblivion like a shark in the wave. I have a hatred for testaments and for tombs; Rather than...

Do we learn something from the books we read or just filling up our free time?

The main reason why I am reading is to learn something out of it. Literature is too sacred to be just a distraction among many others. That being said, I do not limit myself to books about philosophy or some other informative subject ; writers like Balzac have a lot to teach me despite that...

    Michel Houellebecq

Extension du domaine de la lutte (go figure it's english title..) - Michel Houellebecq The book has confirmed my interest in this controversial author. It's thesis is that the competition that caracterizes social relations in the capitalistic system has extended it's boundaries to affective...

Where are you? (in the book you are reading) - please read 1st post

I'm at Chambéry with Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Madame de Warens. A good friend of them has just died ; Rousseau responded by asking if he was going to inherit a special black dress that he was coveting from the recently deceased person, thus saddening M. de Warens.

    Greetings from a masochistic frenchy

I have lost the capability to be "filled with wonder" when reading french poetry because the words that it relies on to create poignant images are the same one that are used in newspapers, in textbooks, in governmental papers, in research articles, in daily life. Being used to see the words in a...

Yet another "100 greatest books" list...

There is subjective and subjective ; about 80% of the list consists in english books, the rest being mostly classics from the Antiquity. How can someone believe that such a patently overblown proportion can be representative of the humanity's literary heritage? To me, this list is nothing more...

    Greetings from a masochistic frenchy

French is a nice language. I am not credulous nor chauvinistic enough to believe that it is greatest among every language - as some people often say about their own - but I am still deeply attached to it, and wouldn't want to change for any other :p As curious as it may seem, I am looking...

    Greetings from a masochistic frenchy

I was hopping for a generic application form - it would have made the process simpler :p Anyways : My name's Marc-André Pelletier, I'm a 20 years old philosophy student from Quebec, a fictional nation subordinated to another fictional nation - Canada, which is more like a semblance (un...
