Joe Queenan talks about reading 125 books a year.

he's a whiny , douche bag. a local FM morning show used to have him on every now and again years ago, was a whiny, douche bag then, and now. he said he routinely has 60-70 books going at one time? I call b.s. , how can he even remember what's going on? People have talked about having...

    Does size matter?

isn't it true that some of the old authors like Tolstoy got paid by the word? or is that myth? anyone know?

Is this the end for books?

exactly, interlibrary loan is such a great thing, without it most libraries would be alot more useless today. I don't know how many times I've had a book on my TBR or TBB list and simply got it via interlibrary loan, you can at least see if it's worth it to buy it for the long term thus...

    what is wrong with society

J T is right, or should I say correct, there is a change going on. People just don't talk to one another anymore, if you try and engage in a bit of banter you're looked at like an alien. America is such a high crime country with the media and TV showing it most everyone is literally scared of...

    Leo Tolstoy: War and Peace

sounds like you read Constance Garrett's translation, she edited some things for the victorian english crowd, today there are better translations IMHO.

Amazon starts imprint for translated literature

I think this is a great idea. We in the entire english speaking world tend to be very insular. Obviously part of that is that english is the lingua franca but we are missing out on a whole host of great books without more translations. I welcome this development.

E-Book price war is heating up

to me this isn't any different than a publisher releasing the hardcover version first and releasing the paperback version at a later date. They've done this for decades so correct me if I'm wrong. they've always made you wait for the cheaper paperback version, if you really wanted to read it...

    Is amazon good for customers?

I like amazon and have ordered from them may times. My only concern is if they have so much power they could dictate what is sold and published and the diversity of the publishing market may suffer. think of what's happened to CD sales and many of the big box retailers. One thing I'll...

slow reading: An antidote for a fast world?

I know I've had to intentionally remind myself to slow down when reading a novel or short story. I get so used to reading a plethora of news websites, blogs and message boards so quickly I sometimes need to remind myself I'm reading for pleasure and slow down a bit. good article.
