Do you read more male/female writers?

Years ago I rarely read any books by female writers,tho not cos I was anti-women,and I rarely strayed from the fantasy/horror/sci-fi genres. For several years now tho I've read both equally,and read right across the board. And this year the girls are definitely ahead!
 
I'm not sure whether I read more female or more male writers, but I can say I've noticed more fantasy and science fiction novels published by female authors lately. Some of the ones I've read in the last few years include: Audrey Niffeneger (although her first book is probably in the literature category), Sarah Monette, Catherynne Valente, and Susanna Clarke. A long time ago, I used to read Sheri S. Tepper, and back then she seemed to be the one of the few female fantasy writers. Of course, there are plenty of female writers that do not limit themselves to these genres, although browsing back through my own personal reading list, I do not see as many.
 
This question pops up now and then and it always makes me blink hard(think deer in the headlights). For someone who keeps lists of books she reads every year, I really can't answer this question without consulting my notebook. The gender of the authors I read are not foremost in my head when I choose a book, for the most part. I don't choose books by that criteria, so I haven't kept a tally of boys vs girls on this subject. According to my notebook, I've read 19 books written by women, and 7 by fellas. The current book is by a woman, but the next few will be by men.
 
I have read more books written by men. But have several in the "To Read" pile that have female authors
 
It's about 3 to 1, males to females, but some of my favorite books were written by women.
 
Interesting question. I don't know. I'm fairly certain I read more male writers... guess it depends what I'm in the mood for. In Christian or historical fiction, there seems to be a lot more women writers, so when I read that genre I go with women. In science fiction and fantasy, I'm not all that widely read b/c I'm working on catching up on YA series. I think there are more guys writing in the genre as a whole though, so males there.
 
I usually read more books from Male authors. it's not that I don't like female authors (J.K. Rowling is my fave) but I prefer male author's books.
 
Chelsea Caine bothered me immensely. Seriously, man, there are a ton of female authors better than her. Try Karen Traviss or Nevada Barr
 
I usually read male writers, but I occasionally read women. My girlfriend is the same way. It seems like more men write the types of books we like, fantasy/philosophy/etc
 
I go out of my way to read female authors when they appear in the genres I read.
1) This year I see only three out of thirteen for the books I have read so far.
2) On the other hand, my favorite three authors are Vladimir Nabokov, Virginia Woolf and John Banville, and I am on my way to reading virtually all of what they each have written.
3) The most spectacular book I have read is by a female: The Stream of Life by Clarice Lispector.
4) My most recent purchase is by Virginia Woolf.

So figure it which way you will. :flowers:
 
I find that I typically read more books written by males then females. It isn't a conscious decision, more "classic" works are simply penned by males.
 
I've only kept a list for the last 4 years, but having just gone over the last three years, I predominately read male authors, 2/3rds to 1/3rd female.
I don't consider the gender of the author when choosing any book. But I suppose the types of books I gravitate towards tend to be written by male authors.
