There's a scene in one of the Eagle books where Cato had to eat raw pork because lighting a fire might attract the attention of enemies.
I was like, "Really? Are Roman soldiers tough enough to eat raw pork without suffering from fatal food poisoning?"
I can't remember which book it was...
Depends on who you ask. Many Singaporeans of my mother's and my generation are actually still supportive of corporal punishment.
The story about corporal punishment that appears in my book is about a girl who was constantly abused in her youth. She called the whole corporal punishment thing a...
Singapore Sucks! is an eclectic collection of short stories, essays and poems about Singapore. Various topics such as conscription in Singapore, the acceptability of corporal punishment, political oppressiveness in our country and Singaporeans’ fascination with white culture are explored via the...
Ah My Goddess! :)
Yes, I remember hiding the books in my locker when I was in the Army. We were allowed one shelf at the bottom for personal stuff then and since I was a live-in soldier, I brought along my Ah My Goddess! books to read during free time.
Ah My Goddess! tops my list. For now.
Speaking of errors in Lee Child's books, I try not to notice them at all because they might get in the way of my enjoyment.

Lee Child mentioned in several Reacher novels that Jack Reacher wanders around America with only one set of clothes, but when they get dirty, he buys new ones and discards the old ones. He doesn't do laundry. He just buys new clothes.
So yeah, he does change his clothes.
In modern times, people would regard Odysseus as a jerk.
I mean, sure, he went through a lot and the female servants were rude to his wife and so on... But did he really have to kill the whole lot (servants included) at the end?
Heroic? I don't think so...
Can I suggest Enid Blyton? She's a British author who wrote books (many of them fairy tales) for children. I used to read her books when I was in grade school.
Cold Days is already out for a while now. And having read both Ghost Story and Cold Days, I think I prefer Harry to be a fully functional wizard. Not that there aren't any cool moments in Ghost Story, like when Bob kicks some spiritual butt, but the book's just not the same without Wizard Harry.
The Song of the Lioness series by Tamora Pierce is a good series with a strong female protagonist. High fantasy setting, so expect medieval-style combat with swords. Basically, the story is about a young girl who wants to be a knight so she disguises herself as a boy to enroll in the all-male...
Hi fellows, I am a writer and internet activist based in Singapore.
I write political satire, and because the leaders of Singapore are not known for their sense of humour and forgiving attitude towards their critics, I am only known by my pseudonym, Singa Crew.
Even though I deal mainly in...
