Moderation of quantity and quality is definitely the key. I went through an obsessive tv watching phase when I was younger too, but lately I've barely been watching it at all. As long as my children's lives are balanced (i.e., they are reading and not living otherwise sedentary lives) and they...
I'm a definite Auster fan as well. Oracle Night was my favorite...we've all had a "bue notebook" in our lives at some point, and he captured the essence of that beautifully.
I too rarely get rid of my books. I have no problems lending them out or even giving my copy to a friend and immediately replacing it with another, but I never sell them back or get rid of them. I'm only an occasional re-reader, but I like to hold onto them all....they are like my souveniers of...
I agree with a lot of what everyone is saying. I too drew the parallels between the dark mark and current world events. In a way it made the story more enjoyable for me though, it gave me an element of the story to relate to and draw from.

I reread my books a lot. I am constantly refering to passages or quotes I've marked. I agree that the mark of a really great book is one that you can read over and over again.
I am constantly buying books. I'm not really a library person, so anything I want to read I buy or borrow from friends. I probably buy books at least twice a month.
I can spend hours and hours just browsing in a book store if I'm not looking for anything particular, on the flip side I can just go in and get out if I know exactly what I'm after. It just depends on my mood I guess.
I use those post it flags, very sticky, and you can mark the paragraph where you left off. Also useful to mark quotes or passages you want to refer to again.
Book 5 was much darker than the others. Harry went from being such a sweet boy to a surly teen.....I miss the innocence of the early books. I think #1 will always be my fav.
