I have to respectfully disagree with your statement about Midnight Oil. They had plenty of hits and quite the following well into the 90's
 
I don’t agree with this article. “The Cure” was a huge alternative band with multiple top 10 hits in the 90’s after gaining success in the 80’s. Disintegration was released in ‘89 with “Fascination Street” peaking at #1 and “Lovesong” topping at #2. They had 2 more top 40 hits in that album as well. Then in ‘92, “Wish” was released and had 3 top 10’s with “High” (#1) “Friday I’m in Love” (#1 Platinum) and “A Letter to Elise” (#2). They followed with 2 more top 20’s (#14, #15) in 1996 and a top 10 in 1997. It wasn’t just R.E.M.
