A Historical Fiction/Non-Fiction for A Book Club

My community for the past 2 years has had a book club called One Book One Community in which once a year we'll get together to get the books then one more time to discuss them. We have read Memory Boy and Chasing Vermeer so far and we're looking for another good book to read. Sense the demographic of our book club is all ages, about 5th grade to 80 years young, we'd like a book that appeals to all of the age groups. We've determined that a historical fiction/non-fiction book with kids and possibly adults in it would be good because the historical part of it could keep the adults interested. The book has to be around 150 pages, give or take 25 or so, at the 5th grade reading level give or take a grade level, and have uplifting storyline hopefully with a happy ending (everyone loves happy endings). We thought a book possibly about a family's journey somewhere or through something, possibly a family on the Oregon trail? If this topic is in the wrong forum sorry, please move it, it's my first time here :)

Going thru a journey, there is "Jip, His Story" by Katherine Paterson, where a (slave) boy tries to "escape" from being captured by his former owner. Not anywhere near Oregon though. He is in Vermont, and destination is Canada. Paterson also wrote Bridge to Terabithia.

Then there is also Richard Peck's The Teacher's Funeral. Hilarious book. Reminded me of Twain's style. No journey though. Setting is 1904, Dakota farmfields.
