I had a friend in high school who moved here(Kansas) from South Carolina. When she found out where they were going, she studied various tv news announcers and shed her southern accent so she would sound like a "hick." But she just sounded prentious and annoying. She sounded more "back eastern" but not from anywhere we'd want to go. I like the various accents people are "born" with. They add character and deminsion to one's speech. I know actors are expected to affect various accents in their line of work, but sometimes I wonder just who they're using for role models.
